Domestic varietals dominate this downstairs hideaway, nestled beside a nail salon. The narrow front room is outfitted with urban-rustic flair--tree-trunk tables, farm implements, a room-length bar made from a massive white-oak slab. Muted lamps provide romantic cover for couples nibbling artisanal cheeses and meats and sipping on affordable all-American vintages that average about $30 a bottle. The cozy back quarters are adorned with local street artists' paintings, myriad mirrors and slouch-worthy banquettes ideal for commandeering deep into the night.
Hits:
You'll savor dozens of delicious American wines sold at recession-friendly prices. Plus, the back room is a superb clandestine refuge.
Misses:
With farm tools and splintery windows placed helter-skelter, the decor feels too slapdash. Also, the boring bottled-beer selection could use a little TLC.
