Here is a place where the people working have a passion for movies. They can answer any questions you have, no matter how simple or specific. In addition, they write reviews of their own and post them on the wall for all the new releases. The collection is phenomenol filled with the basic genres as well as international films which you only hear about at the Oscars. To top it all off, the prices here are astoundingly cheap when you pay up-front for 25 movies, you get a special price which equals about $2.50 a movie.

There was a time I thought I just had to have every one of David Lynch's films and some of his older works is really difficult to locate. Kim's video was the only place that I could purchase Eraserhead...I thought that was quite an accomplishment. I also found a copy of a non-dubbed original language of Fellini's Casanova...that was really surprising.
Additionally, the staff is really knowledgeable about movies and yes at times I am the annoying customer who comes in to ask a really generalized stupid question like " uh...do you know that movie where the girl was wearing a dress and was murdered with a knife?"
Surprisingly enough, with enough effort ( from the kind sales people) I always find my movie. Cheers to you Kim!

All the cool stuff you used to be able to find at tower Records (back when it was cool) is now at Other Music, an unrelated store across the street that specializes in truly alternative music -- not the so-called genre, but little known bands in a variety of styles, folks on indie labels, and a great selection of world music. Decent prices too. Check them out.

J & R is THE place in the city to buy anything computer or electronic related. You usually cannot beat their prices, and they simply have the best selection, possibly because of more space, but you just can't beat it.
Cameras, computers, printers, music, DVDs, CDs, accessories, it's all here.
They also have student software in the store which can be a great help.
Sales people are very helpful. My biggest complaint is that you have to keep going up and downstairs to find what you need, sort of like Pearl Paint, but at least there are escalators!
Also - if you ever need to return anything, it's like going to an underground prison - kind of a scary experience, and they're not too happy to see you there.
Other than that, A+!

Tower Records is large loud and fully stocked with all of the newest DVD's, Cd's and anything music and/or movie related. You can find it smack dab in the heart of Times Square. It's great to hang out on the lower floors way they have the magazine/books, cafe and sofas. They also have movie theater on the lower level and a bathroom somewhere around. Stop by when they have sales and stock up.

I am a movie buff - I watch just about every kind of film from every decade since the silents. It is difficult to stump the staff at New York Video as they carry just about everything (and they order it as soon as it comes out). It is a small store and doesn't display titles like some of the big chains (instead, the covers are on LP album covers that you flip through).
The staff is EXTREMELY helpful. I have had many great conversations with them about films, coffee, the neighborhood....all in all, a pleasant place and I am proud to be a patron.

The and I mean the place to go for Dance tracks in the East Village. Techno, Techno and more Techno they've got more than you can imagine. You can almost chart the evolution of house and related music just by thumbing through their ample inventory. They carry most of the recent releases and seem to have oddball stuff that you wont find easily elsewhere. The staff knows their business and is very helpful. If you have any interest in House music at all this is the place to look around.

More
Well, to be honest I never really shopped for the best prices and quality for used CDs. But I do favor Tower Records on Broadway because I've bought a used CD at this location, the CDs always appear to be in mint condition.
Now the only complaint I have is that they're used CD selection is spread throughout the store. On all three floors you have a USED CD Section so make sure that if when your searching you look through all the sections.
Also if you call during the day during the week, the sales rep that answers the phone might be kind enough to actually look to see if they have a particular cd, which could save you subway ride.
Hope this was Helpful - Paul
