The Sunshine is what we've needed for so long. A theater dedicated to showing independent and foreign films in a nice space with a decent sized screen. The seats are comfortable, the snack bar is really good, and unlike the Angelika, your film isn't constantly interrupted by the rumbling of the subway. Choose this theatre whenever you can!

I do not think I have ever seen a bad movie at this theater. The selection is always excellent, there are lots of available showtimes, and the movies are always great. Sunshine Cinema has many artsy, independent movies, and many foreign movies as well. Oh, and documentaries too! I can remember seeing Napolean Dynamite, the Yes Men, Mean Creek, and the House of Stone and Fog. I liked all of them (except the last one). I highly recommend checking out a flik there; it is very enjoyable. And the people who work there are very helpful in advising what to see!

Landmark's Sunshine Cinema on Houston is in a refurbished building, which gives it a very neat feeling. So many businesses can say this in New York, but it's especially nice to go see an Independent, funky film in a local that reflects the same vibe. There are great café/waiting tables on the second floor where one can look out over Houston and people watch. The theater typically plays about six different movies at a time. Each theater has it's own feeling. The one in the basement has a beautiful old ceiling. Granted, you don't go to a movie theater just for the atmosphere, but these eclectic extras make the whole experience pleasant. There's typically not more than one movie at any time that I'm interested in seeing. The weekend midnight movies are always fun - oldies and goodies.

There's only one place to go see a movie in New York City and it's here at the Sunshine Cinema. Avoid the other "theater" on Houston Street. The Sunshine Cinema has the best indie films every week with a cult favorite every weekend. This theater gives you the old charm and feel of old movie theaters. This is what a movie going experience is supposed to be like!

Maybe it's because I'm new to living in New York but until a few months ago I had never been to the Sunshine Cinema on Houston Street. Located on the LES this theatre shows independent and foreign films in a cozy environment. The Sunshine Cinema also does late night showing of old school cult movies too. I saw the last Pedro Almodovar film there and had a wonderful time. Not too loud not too cold.

Sunshine is a better than average Manhattan movie theater with a pretty consistent lineup of arty-type, yet popular, movies. In my experience its more spacious and pleasant than the typical sony and ua theaters and it has a better snack bar. Of course it is no BAM, but hey, there can only be one, I suppose.

Not only is the repetoire of this cinema probably the most interesting in the city - independent & foreign films, but many mainstream-enough features to warrant frequent visits - but the theater itself is state-of-the art both technologically and for comfort. Most of the theaters are stadium-seating with very comfortable seats; the rooms are completely sound-proof (no street noise or sound escaping from other theaters) and they turn the lights _all_ the way down when the feature is playing. Cineastes will appreciate that. Projection quality is second to none, as is sound quality. The entire experience is so much better than the other main downtown independent cinemas, I only consider going to the others now as an absolute last resort.
