Was excited to go to Magnolias just like everyone else. I got 4 cupcakes, one was red velvet with sugary coolwhip icing, the other with chocolate icing, and the other 2 where nearly unidentifiable. One had german chocolate icing, but the cake didn't look or taste like chocolate to me. The other had some swirled white and brown icing with no taste and some sort of spiced cake. All 4 where dry and crumbly and half the size of other competitors. I've had better Duncan Heinz. Sad that they are making a fortune off those things.
Pros: The excitement in line
Cons: Had better grocery store cupcakes

We have always been huge fans of Magnolia, so when we got married we had a cupcake tree instead of a wedding cake. The Magnolia staff (Misty in particular) were amazingly helpful and sweet (no pun intended) in getting the details just right for us.
We ended up giving away cupcakes in individual boxes as favors as well. All together it got to be pricey, but not more than a normal wedding cake.
I'm going back Saturday to get a red velvet cake for a friend's birthday and the Magnolia cook book is a favorite of mine for baking at home!
Pros: Amazing cakes and cupcakes (of course)
Cons: the calories

I don't get it? Maybe my cupcakes had been sitting out all day and just weren't fresh.
My husband carried these on his lap on the flight home from NYC all the way to Houston for my birthday. I felt bad admitting they were not good. They were purchased and tasted the same day.
My neighbor bought me a birthday cake from the local grocery store and everyone enjoyed that more.
Maybe the other items are good there but I would avoid the popular VANILLA CUPCAKES. Yuk.
If you ever see a SPRINKLES CUPCAKE CHAIN, try those. Now, those are to die for!!
Pros: Pretty Cupcakes
Cons: Dry, dry cake

I LOVE cupcakes and ever since I heard about Magnolia's, I couldn't wait till my next trip to NYC. SO when I arrive, it's this shoebox of a bakery. You don't order your cupcakes, they are placed on a table and you choose what you want, very similar to buffet style. I order a vanilla cupcake because I love vanilla frosting and I figure that this is a recipe that's almost fail proof. How do you screw up plain vanilla? After my friends and I pay for our purchase we walk to a nearby park to enjoy our treats. I was grossed out by second bite. The frosting was so heavily laden with oil, it tasted like you were biting into straight shortening. The cake was stale from being outside. I don't know what else to say except that this is a gross cupcake. Run away!!!!!!!
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Taste, lack of space, nowhere to sit ect.

The cupcakes are pretty, the stores are cute and you want to fall in love. But truthfully, I've had their cupcakes on two different trips to New York with the highest expectations and both times have been disappointed. A little place called Mellissa's in SOHO is about 100 times better. Magnolia's frosting just isn't that good. Sorry.
Pros: The sheer volume of cupcakes sold
Cons: They are not that good

Magnolia's is a cupcake landmark. It has the cultural cachet of being name-dropped on Se x and the City. It attracts tourists from far and wide. The staff was incredibly, unreasonably sweet. Some cute old ladies decided to chat with me. However, the actual cupcake itself was merely okay - the cake was a bit dry and I found the frosting underwhelming. Well, not everything can be perfect, right?

Let's see where to start... ok the ridiculous wait. If you want to look like a chump to people who live in the area, waiting in line at Magnolia will do it. Then when you get inside you are met with frazzled, curt staff who look at you like a moron if you even pause during your order or dare to ask a question. Then when you finally get to taste one of these lovely cupcakes, your mouth is filled with a sugary - sugar filled - sugar like - sugar taste that takes you back to those fond memories of cheap grocery store birthday cake frosting you had as a kid. So you scrape some of that off and you dig into the cake part. Wow... it's like biting into the most average, generic cake-like substance you can find. I cannot believe this place still gets so many people (dummies like me I guess) to wait for this.
Pros: lots of time to meet talk to strangers in line!
Cons: the wait, the tasteless cake, the sugar saturated icing

The coconut cake was good, and the banana pudding was very good....but nothing blew us away. Not to mention...it's pretty darn expensive! I'd rather go to the corner store for a Hershey's bar next time.
Pros: delicious banana pudding
Cons: cupcakes

i just got back from a trip to NYC and magnolia was one of the memories i made. i tried their lemon cake and blueberry jamboree... both delicious-- especially the cake though!
i come from the frosting school of, more butter to sugar... having said that, magnolia can lighten up a bit on the butter content of their frosting.
i WILL be back!
Pros: delicious desserts
Cons: pricey, heavy handed buttercream

the cupcakes are right out of a fairy-tale, frosted in pastels and whimsical sugar sprinkles and flowers
the iced mochas are large and delicious, the peanut butter ice-box pie is not to be missed
but honestly you can't leave here without at least one cupcake
and the location is wonderful and while surely have you coming back for more again and again
Pros: Cute, Great Location, Delicious Sweets
Cons: Wait
