I have been a jewelry wholesaler for 12 years. There has never been a time wherein I could not find what I was looking for at Metalliferous. Throughout my career, Metalliferous has been helpful in sourcing everything from beads to plating and casting and purchasing gold. The staff is helpful and with an open showroom, (if you're an adult- and dont need babysitting) you can find everything you want and more. Tons of one of a kind items, standard die cut pieces, design items, gas tanks (with hands on instruction) books, beads and tons more. I recommend Metalliferous to the professional designer, the student and the person who has a craft table in their kitchen. A must for FIT students. If you're in NYC- this is where you shop for findings- don't bother with anyone else for Metal supply. Metalliferous: The best price, the best selection and a super cool knowledgable staff - Ask for Anthony, Lisa, Nancy, David, Molly or Nicoli... just be clear about what you need- and they will help you find it.

Watch out!!! I got charged triple the price by the dark-haired, boyish haircut sales woman. She commited a crime that I should have reported. I have shopped here 5 times with the blonde woman always shouting, but this was the worst in my life here. I purchased many different gauges of sterling silver wires and the tall boyish haircut sales lady gave me the worst shopping experience ever. I asked her to cut some more sterling silver wires for me and she had the nerves to say that you already purchased some and why do you need extra? At the same time, she rolled her eyes at me, sucked her tongue at me, and gave her blonde co-worker a smile and they were laughing out loud. When she cut the wires for me, she did not give me the exact amount of feet that I asked for, instead, she charged me triple the price!!! I would never, ever go back to shop at this dishonest, unprofessional place. I wished I reported her stupidity and for cheating me with the price. Shouldn’t she be really happy that I am spending more $$$ and being such a great customer to order more wires. This is an extremely unfriendly, dishonest and arrogant place to shop.

The one thing I hate about this store is how narrow all the aisles are - I have the constant feeling I'm on the subway as someone is always shoving past you.
That being said, if you're into making jewelry, this is a great place to come. They have esoteric and normal books on the craft - wood carving, metalsmithing, etc. They have colored wire, drills, every tool you could need - saws, wax, pliers, etc.
You do need TIME - in the back they have bins and bins, hundreds of them - of various jewelry findings, obscure metal charms and supplies. YOu could spend hours here.
They also opened a small room with beads - semi-precious stones, crystals, and threads for your more basic jewelry-making.
The staff is also super knowledgeable if you need any guidance, and the owner once called me because he found a plastic bag I left there, in which was a jacket and a manuscript I had written - definitely gives me a good feeling about the staff.

I am always amazed by the sheer range (price and stuff) of this store. You could spend a whole day just looking at things and being inspired. They have good 2nd hand stuff, good budget stuff, every kind of metal object you could imagine. And then there are the beads next door. However, the staff are like a pack of baying dogs. There is one woman, 'blonde' with way too much of the wrong-coloured foundaton who almost seethes with every word. It's astounding, and she is like that to everyone. I don't get it. I mean living in NY does make you give up on friendly service, but surely it takes her more effort to be a rabid bitch than just to do her job. Having said that the girls in the bead section are nice, and there are some very helpful girls in terms of best tools to buy, but you have to persevere. Wear an iPod and it's all good.

Metalliferous is one of my husband's favorite stores in New York City. They have everything metal you can imagine -- sheets cut in specific shapes, beads, trinkets, etc. Lots of artists and crafters frequent this store. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgable and nice. It's a little difficult to find -- as it's up on the 2nd floor. They also ship, if you are from out of town. Need metal? This is the place for you!!

You can find almost any form of metal needed for jewelry and decorating here- chains, sheets, dowels, rods, ball bearings ("it's all ball bearings these days!"), and all kinds of metal- nickel, steel, copper, iron, bronze, etc. The service is very helpful, but just make sure you know exactly what you want before you get chain cut, cause once it's cut you gotta pay for it!

One floor up on 46th street this haven awaits the serious jeweler and the hobbyist, providing fine and sterling silver beads, wire, chains and all the tools and books you need to tell you how to produce the results you desire. The prices are virtually wholesale, the staff is knowledeable and the selection is astounding. Be warned: sometimes the staff can be surly. And not just when people drop trays of tiny silver beads.

This is a great supply store for people who make their own jewelry. If you need wire, chain, or other metal jewelry components or tools (silver only), Metalliferous probably has some of the lowest prices in town, a good selection and high quality. However, you shouldn't mind feeling as if you are in someone's private stock room, having to obey their (many) rules. The store is small, so don't bring any large bags, or friends for that matter. But, it's definitely worth the trip.
