Never thought I'd dine here, because I like sushi but always thought the difference between good and great sushi would elude me, so why waste the money? Enter a family member with a debt to repay to my husband, and next thing you know we're eating at Masa.
I've done all the NYtimes **** and Michelin *** in New York and found Masa to be exceptional even by multiple-star standards. The service was excellent, and I was impressed to see an Anglo female waitperson at a high-end Japanese joint - a first for me. We started with six appetizer courses (three cold, three hot), about 20 pieces of sushi and a light fruit dessert. All the food but especially the fish was sublime. The chef uses toro like other restaurants use parsley, and there were meltingly good hunks of it throughout the meal. We also had lots of summer truffles, shaved into some dishes, and even wrapping a piece of fish during the extended sushi course. We all left satiated but not overstuffed.
The only downside is the price. Our meal was $450 per person (low end of the $400-600 stated on the website). Wines by the glass were an extortionate $19 each, and the least expensive bottle was $80. I'm sure our generous host didn't see much change from $3000. for our table of four.
Pros: Fabulous, fabulous food
Cons: Price

I've never been to a Japanese restaurant before, and this place is a favorite of my friend. Walked up to it, and from my first impression I never would have believed I would receive such a great meal. I'm unfamiliar with seafood, sushi, etc. But everything I ordered tasted wonderful. The staff was very courteous and helpful, the dining experience was nice and cozy. I didn't feel afraid to ask questions. I will definitely go back! Everyone is hospitable, you wouldn't think you were in the middle of New York City. Good luck trying to park a car though if you had to.
Pros: affordability, helpful, delicious!
Cons: parking

I strongly recommend this place. It's kinda like a Japanese fast food since you eat fast and don't hang out there because there is always a line outside. The food is delicious and cheap.
Try the Miso Ramen with Butter an Corn!!

I keep going back for the 50% off sushi. Actually, I think it is the very best value sushi in NYC -- good quality sushi, for such a good price. Order the sushi/sashimi plates or the speciality rolls. Some reviewers get hung up on things like service... personally I really only go for the food and the price. If you feel the same way, then you'll love this place too.
Pros: Inexpensive

I am a sushi chef and like to get out to try other places. This is truly a hidden gem! I only order omakase (chefs choice) and this is the best i have ever had at a very resonable price. The sake list is huge! The head chef has 35 years exp. and is so knowledgeable he will answer any questions you have and will educate you on any intrest you have in this cuisine. All around a great place if you want better food than the big names at a much more reasonable price.
Pros: Best omakase in the city for the price
Cons: none that i found

It can be very easy to run up a bill at Kuruma if you don't know what you are doing (I guess that could be said for any high end sushi place), but it can also be very easy to experience the amazing sushi on a budget. My fiance and I come here regularly and are able to spend less then $80 for sushi lunch specials with beverages. The assortment you get is perfect and will leave you satisfied, especially with an extra Unagi Maki. Lunch is the way to go to enjoy Kuruma as a first timer and won't break your wallet. Ginger and Wasabi are home made and delicious. The fish is always perfect and as fresh as can be. Be sure to make a reservation even for lunch to play it safe. Service is perfect. I love trying new places, but this is one place I will always come back to.
Pros: Amazing fish, traditional place, and great service.
Cons: Pricey if you go a'la cart.

Tomo is a fabulous restaurant . The service is just the way it should be COMPLETE! Whether you go alone or with friends you will always get the top of the line customer service. The staff is top notch. The service just makes the food all that more wonderful. The take-out is top-of-the-line. They pack it like if they were setting up for a picnic in the park. I can't say enough about TOMO. I just love it.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: Nothing.

We went there with the intention of eating from the restaurant week menu. We had a nice drink at the bar first (they have a great cocktail menu - try the pisco-punch) and were seated promptly at a great booth in the back which was private and excellent. Our waiter Jeremy was very nice and explained all about the different types of Wagyu beef - American, Australian, and Japanese Kobe. We were so enticed by what he told us we decided to try their tasting flight for 2 - you get 4 4oz portions of each type of Wagyu plus American prime. It was very expensive but we said why not, let's try it. All I can say is OH MY GOD it was the best thing I've ever eaten. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and every bite was just amazing. We had some great appetizers too - the thick cut bacon with black truffles is to die for. The Kobe beef ravioli are also quite awesome. Do not skip the parmesan fries and the truffled creamed corn. Everything was so delicious it was amazing. There are some reasonably priced (under $70) good wines on the list. The service was attentive, professional, friendly and great. The decor is very unique and interesting, a little S&M/dungeon, a little clubby, not boring at all. A great variety of music was played all night at the perfect volume, you can converse with ease and still enjoy the music. The bathrooms are your typical unisex weirdo type - acquaint yourself with how they work before you have too many drinks! I am very discriminating when it comes to dining out and this place wowed me in a big way. I enjoyed the food much more than the many typical steakhouses (Luger's, Mortons, etc) I've visited, it was much more special and much more delicious. Kobe is worth the big bucks, that's for sure, and this place knows how to do it right!
Pros: Food, especially the Kobe beef, service
Cons: Be ready to shell out big bucks

In the midst of cheap eats catering to NYU students, MARUMI is like a Zen oasis. A clean, calm, comfortable space serving authentic Japanese food prepared and served by authentic Japanese people. I say this with some surprise and much irony because in New York, Japanese eateries tend to be the creations of Chinese, Korean and Thai restaurateurs. Also a pleasant surprise is the quality of the food: Fresh and flavorful. I say surprise due to the very affordability of the menu. Food of this caliber could easily demand higher prices, but Marumi remains a place of good ol? fashioned standards based in the philosophy of ?good food at good prices.? It?s a simple and sound formula; yet, fast becoming endangered amongst the polarities of ever-increasing fast-food chains and the eating palaces of the new Time Warner Center. On a recent visit, Marumi?s Una-Don and Mini Chirashi were both delectable. And though the service can be subdued at times, think Zen? Not every server needs to yodel their name, rank and serial number like some misbegotten cheerleader to provide good service. Sometimes, one just wants their miso soup to be served quietly and their sushi to be presented unobtrusively.
Pros: Value, Location, Ambience
Cons: service can SEEM too subdued

I love Gari, though only eat there for special occasions as it is so expensive. (Well, I only order the Omakase, and at unlimited sushi, it gets pricey.) There have been off nights, but they are unusual at this place. Overall, I think it's fantastic, and you get a special kind of sushi that is unique and wonderful. The seared fatty tuna and the smoked Cod are amazing. The Snapper with salad and pine nuts is refreshing. You won't find an omakase serving quite like this anywhere else.
Pros: Omakase
Cons: Expensive
