The food is literally addicting - and the price and service are perfect. If you are reading this - I highly recommend you go try it - you will be thrilled. Truly do not understand even one bad review. Of all the Indian restaurants - this is the absolute best. No argument. Chowhound agrees!!!

I am very surprised to see the negative reviews for Madras- I went here with two friends and we really enjoyed it. Our food was very flavorful, and we certainly got plenty of it. We also had no trouble with the service, which we actually found to be very attentive and polite. I wonder how we ended up having such a good experience there when so many other people apparently didn't. Hmmm.

i have lived in the neighbourhood for a while it was originally a japanese restaurant, then uder new management was converted to an indian restaurant .
Since they opened this place went tthough a lot of changes but the food was always great and the service average. Recently in the past 3 yrs I even though I know the owner Manny a nice guy I have recieved spoilt food and bad service. I am not sure why but I do not think manny spends as much time as he used to i rarely see him now a days and his wait staff right now is rude and incompetent
Pros: forget about it

The only reason I give this place two stars is because the food didn't completely fall under the categor of inedible. The service was horrible. There were tables reserved for a party, and before the birthday girl even got there the waiter was complaining to us that there was a reservation for UP TO15 and he lost another reservation because of us. Then he handed us menus and expected us to be ready for appetizers almost immediately and was annoyed that we needed more time to choose. The waiter walked away from us as we were ordering! When he came back to order entres he complained to us that we weren't ordering enough, and he was blaming us for loosing money. Then when they bring out the food, since we didn't know what exactly came with the dishes when he raised his arm and said coconut blabla someone raised their hand and it turned out not to be part of the meal.... he again complained about the fact that he ordered a second one to replace, and CHARGED us. I'm sorry but what kind of waiter doesn't know what comes with each plate, and isn't it their job to know who ordered what. Then after the meal were we were being HARASSED by the complaints of the waiter he has the nerve to tack on an 18% service fee... which by the way he later points out on the most hidden part of the menu that parties over FOUR people get charged service fees. This has to be by far the most inhospitable and unproffesional 'establishment' i've ever stepped foot in. and the dosai tasted like deep fried paper.
Pros: no meat
Cons: everything else

Great vegetarian Indian food. Everything is actually cooked to order rather sitting in the back in steam tables like your average 6th Street curry house. The dosai's (kind of lentil crepe burritos) are excellent and filling. I enjoy the curries but almost always opt for the dosai's. The atmosphere is very plain and uninspiring.
Pros: Dosai's
Cons: Atmoshphere

The prices are very reasonable, especially for NYC. And if you're a carnivore, just try one dish and you won't crave any meat at atll. The dishes may look small, like their prices, but they are totally filling.
I highly recommend the following:
Garlic Paratha
Onion Pakoras
Channa Masala
Any of the Madras Dosas
Mango Lassi
You won't be disappointed
PROS: Everything
CONS: Nothing - And I mean it!

Although the food was decent, it's a major exageration to call this place insanely good. The 3 dishes were all pretty bland and not very spicy at all. The entrees are reasonably priced, but considering the tiny portions and the mediocre taste, it's not a very good value. Some of the places in midtown are definitely better.
Cons: food

The best indian food for the money. Try the saag panir and homemade cheese or one of the sampler platter. Everything is great, even if you are not vegetarian, you will love it.
