I think that this place recieved way too much hype. I do think their gelato is okay but it's also overpriced.

I heard this place is related to Ciao Bella which I was sadly also disappointed by.

It was March. It was cold and rainy. I was in Florence and wanted hot chocolate. I saw a place across the piazza and treated myself and my niece to one of the best cups of cocoa we have ever had. But I noticed that the locals were skipping the hot chocolate and diving into the ice cream. I got the message. I ordered their take on chocolate and I discovered that there are worse things than being cold! I was hooked on gelato.
With that as preamble, I have looked far and wide in our area to find gelato as good. Ferrara's is very good (Grand Street). Otto's is wonderful (8th). But Laboratorio's is the best. It's always fresh. They are creative with the flavors (although I still get chocolate on most days). This is a great place in a goofy location.
Like ice cream? You will love gelato. Love gelato? You will love Laboratorio Del Gelato.

best ice cream/gelato ive had in the city hands down. they have real intreasting flavors, textures are superb and its better than anything you'll find in italy. the prices are pretty reasonable. my only knock is that its in an off the beaten track part of town. i also wish, like ciao bella, that these guys would mass market this stuff more broadly (i.e, sell prepackaged pints in supermarkets, etc).

Master ice cream maker Jon Snyder has done it again. After selling his Ciao Bella empire, he opened up a small ice cream shop located down in the incredibly hip lower east side just a stone throw away from the Tenement Museum. Two great reasons to make your way downtown. Well worth the trip. Where else will you get to sample flavors like watermelon, licorice, and mission fig. Call ahead and find out what the Gelato de jour is. It's always a delicious mystery.
