Good: It was wonderful to be able to go into a place like this and actually be able to see/feel/pickup items right on the spot. It is true you can get all this stuff online, but when you buy online, you can't tell if something is well made or sturdy or just feels right in your hand. The staff was very helpful (at the register and in the store aisles.) There was a man and woman sitting at a table behind the register, but they were quiet and did not interact with the customers.. Bad: I didn't like the no return, no exchange policy. I purchased over $100 worth of items, one of which was a cupcake holder for $24.99. The following week, saw the same Wilton holder at Party City in NJ for $12.50 (at regular price, not sale priced). I realize that overhead in NYC is higher than NJ, but 100% higher? Seems not right...but then again, most folks would have returned the $24.99 one if they could...so maybe that's the reason for the policy.. Improvements: I would like the store to have a return/exchange policy on non-perishable goods. Next time I go back I feel like I should do a window shopping run first, do some price checks, and then buy only those items that are priced within reason - but that would be a waste of my time, and might stop me from going back again unless I really just wanted to go in there for something I'm sure I can't get elsewhere.. Other: There have been a lot of reviews about surly customer service, and I was somewhat disappointed not to find the "Who's next?!!!" guy...hey folks, this IS New York...I didn't find the service to be any worse than most other places, and in fact, I was helped by two different women who were very responsive, and who physically led me to the items I needed/requested. I wouldn't call either of them overly smiley or anything like that, but they did what mattered in a very polite, no-nonsense manner..

NY Cake And Bake holds many New Yorkers hostage. Granted the store is full of everything you might need for your cake decorating but the service is poor, they don't take phone calls well and don't even ask that they set anything aside for pick up on your lunch hour---they won't do it.
I only go to NY Cake & Bake in an emergency.

HOWEVER....
Service is just ok. I felt like I was a semi-bother to most of the staff, save for one very helpful lady [tall with long hair] who didn't seem agitated with my inquiring about how-to's or other purchase related questions. Let me also stress, don't bother asking the lone gentleman who is on staff for assistance. He was either strung out on coffee, or simply dislikes customers who have questions. I can understand they're busy, but if you hang a shingle out for business, don't make customers feel like a nuisance.
Lastly, make sure you do research on pricing before coming here. Some of the merchandise is priced more than reasonably, whereas some of the baking tools are very overpriced, and the staff doesn't take the time to suggest alternatives for lesser-priced tools that will accomplish the task at hand.

New York Cake Supplies on the outside looks worn and run down but the inside is amazing. A friend told me about it when I expressed an interest in baking. They have everything. They have hundreds of cookie molds, pans, frostings and toppings. It's a very huge place and easy to get lost. Last time I was there I found some amazing cookie cutters and delicious frosting.

Calling all betty crocker lovers! If you love to bake, want to learn to bake or even heard of baking this is the store for you. Don't be swayed by the grimy appearance on the outside. Inside there are treasures to be found. They have hundreds of baking utensils. Cookie molds in shapes you never even heard of. And the frosting. Wow. I'm getting a sugar high just thinking about it. An amazing store with amazing prices. Just don't let anyone know. Too much publicity = overpriced items and way too crowded store.

I have never bought anything here for baking purposes. I know that is what the store is about, but it didn't suit my needs.
I came here for pottery tools - I find that their small cookie cutters are fantastic for clay work. Other items are great for other arts & crafts projects that you may work on in your free time.
Think outside the box!
The prices are a heck of a lot cheaper than what you can expect to pay at an arts & crafts supply store.

Did you know food coloring comes in more than four colors? Yeah, neither did I. This baking supply shop has everything, from bag full of different fruit fillings for cakes, to icing mixes, orchids made from sugar, hundreds of cake decorations, and cookie cutters in all shapes and sizes (from kangaroos to sports cars to religious symbols). If you need something for baking -- a pan, a mold, some coloring, chocolate to melt down -- come here. If they don't have it, it hasn't been invented.

Ever say to yourself when you pass a bakery "I can make a cake just as good" Now you can. On the outside the New York Cake store may look rather raggedy but on the inside it's a bakers or a baking novice's fantasy. They literally have every thing you could ever need to bake a cake. You should see the tons of frostings, cake molds and toppings they have.
