The store is filled with a lot of cheap items, so be sure to check out the quality before you buy. If they don't have the part, they can always order it for you, it usually takes about 3-4 days. I think the last time I waited about one week before they could get the part in. The store isn't laid out very well, so it might help to ask the people there to help you find the part that you're looking for. They also sell fans and heaters, small appliances, and lots of sockets. I'd definitely recommend that you check it out. You usually get a good price on the parts that you're looking for.

This hardware store has a great selection of the staples but also some unusual but useful items, like cut to size mats with Indian rug designs and a wide selection of water filters. The staff was not very helpful however when I needed to have keys made. I tried to make replicas of Medeco keys, which I understand can be hard to duplicate. Only one of the six keys that I made worked and they were all made in the same color. The staff did refund my money but had no suggestions on why their machine didn't work.

I love going in and browsing through all the wonderful things. It's just massive. Everything you could possibly need and I've usually had good service (sometimes they get busy). Can't think of a reason to go anywhere else.

Columbia/University Hardware/Housewares is/are terrific. Between the two stores, they have everything. The staff work hard, get to know you, remember you, and vice versa.
You tell Bob what you need, and he responds two ways. "Yes, it's in the 2nd aisle to the left on the bottom shelf, Gary, will you help her find it?" all in one breath,
or
"No, but I can have it for you tomorrow,"and he means it.
The phone is constantly ringing at both places, and these guys are truly problem solvers. They also know everyone in the neighborhood, including painters, carpenters, appliance repair people, whatever you need....
It's a goldmine of everything vital for setting up a dorm room or improving the quality of your life: cleaning materials to maintain your stuff, kitchen supplies, umbrellas, bath towels, paint, spray paint, hangers, keys, locks, lamps, bookcases, scotch tape, folding chairs, etc.
Go there and see for yourself!

I came in htis store to see if they had any kitchen sinks. Actually, they have many brands of sinks and handles to match it. You can go with the designer brands which are still costly and at pretty much the same prices as elsewhere or go for something cheaper. The people there are helpful and can point you in the right direction. They are also quick with their orders that you put in.

I have never been able to stump the fellas at Lopez. They have everything and are SO helpful. It is a small hardware store, but fills your needs. They have helped me figure out efficient ways to fix simple things around the house and their prices are very reasonable. I rarely visit another home store, as they seem to have it all (from lamps to dishes to drywall screws).

I'm amazed that Rainbow is in the neighborhood because the have such good prices. There is a large selection of everything from housewares to hardware stuff (in the basement) to cosmetics and stationary to dishes. It's fun to see the things they have on display for clearance. You can really get anything there. It's the place I like to go most to get anything I need for the home.

Despite the cheap prices, the quality at this clothing is suprisingly NOT poor. In fact, the blouses or pants you may find there can survive more than one use. (Slight exaggeration - only kidding.) There are plenty of bargain finds for $10 there. Lots of dressy clothing and casual items. This is just another example of discovering good bargains without having to pay New York-skyscraper prices. Give it a try, won't leave a dent in your pocket if you're satisfied.

If there are just a few little 'do it yourself' tools that you need to pick up and don't want to wait until you are near a Home Depot - it's good to know there is a local hardware store in midtown manhattan. It's a bit pricier than home depot, but the convenience is well worth it. Try to avoid lunch hour and right after work at 5pm to miss the crowds and have to wait for tired service. If you can go mid morning you will get the best attention
