BUT a really nice work friend of mine's family owns it. It's a Korean Bodega that just opened up this year & are still figuring out the ropes. They're just a really nice family & single mother trying to make it in the States. Please stop by if you happen to be in the neighborhood & if it's good, go back again!

ah, the power of cheese. I am a long admirer of the creamy stuff, but I can't pretend to know much about it. Murray's inspires you to become an aficionado. Who knew a little bit of dairy could bring so much variety. I wouldn't recommend going on a weekend-too crowded.

I have been going to Mon Chong grocery store ever since I was a little girl in the 80's. Now, they have opened a second larger location just half a block from the original store, which is still open. They specialize in asian drinks, snacks, noodles, chips and herbel remedies. They always provide the lowest prices possible to its customers and the original owner and her sons still work at the store. This is what makes this store so special. They don't hire workers who don't care about how the store is being run. They run it themselves so they know every customer is taken care of and treated right. They are the most respectful and friendliest grocery shop I have ever been to.

A gourmet market on the Upper East side, Butterfield Market is packed to the brim with a fresh produce, specialty foods and imported treats. The prepared food section is worth checking out as well for while these dishes are a bit more pricey they are most definitely worth the few extra dollars.

I had read about Jack's Stir Brew prior to a recent trip to NYC but I didn't think I'd have time to get up to the Village to try it. Low and behold, there was a recently opened second shop about a one minute walk from my hotel in the South Seaport area. It's pretty small, but I read that it's bigger than the original location.
Amazingly good coffee, and I'm a total coffee snob. It's true that he's able to brew very strong, dark roast coffee with very low acidity.
Now I have to figure out how to simulate stir brewing and oxygenation at home, because I can't be going 3000 miles for a cup of coffee. Jack has spoiled me, and now my standards for coffee house coffee are too high for any other coffee house.
He needs to patent his brewing method, and start selling the machines to independent coffee houses and destroy the evil empire.
Pros: OMG--Best dark roast coffee I've ever had
Cons: No branches in California

More
Zabar's to me is a capsule of my childhood. Since I was a little girl, this has been the go-to spot for my family, who lived in New Jersey. And since moving into the city, I make my rare forays to the Upper West Side for this store, because it truly is something special.
I think the food is pretty good overall; the matzo balls hold a place of honor in any high holiday celebration in our family. If some people complain about the price, then they haven't gone to Eli's or Dean and Deluca's - those places are just exorbitant. The prices for the overall quality I think are justified. It's a happy medium between standard supermarket fare and snootier-than-thou 'gourmet', where the costs seems to support the overhead and not the product. Here at Zabar's, you're spoiled for choice by the array of cheeses, fish, meats, and prepared foods here. Whether your tastes run to the mundane or truly eclectic, you. will. find. something here. No question.
Yes, it's cramped and noisy and commotional, but that's the fun of shopping here. Here, getting elbowed aside by a little old lady in a proper hat and gloves just seems funnier than it does at Whole Foods. I've had my cheeks pinched by the fish manager when ordering their world-famous smoked salmon and had an unofficial advisory board at the deli counter on whether I should get the brisket or the pastrami. Zabar's necessitates interacting with your fellow New Yorkers and whether it's positive or negative, it's always an authentic New York experience.

I am expanding my horizons and learning more about wine everyday...well maybe every week. I have bought wine from tons of stores and never been truly happy with the recommendations provided by the store owners. I recently found this gem of a wine store in Chelsea. The guys that work there (while they look like football players) are surprisingly educated in wine and were extremely helpful in choosing some great bottles under $10. These folks truly understand the benefits of customer loyalty.
Cheers landmark wines!
PS they also specialize in sake and have a huge selection
