i have to walk past this place every morning on the way to work. after subjecting myself to this stench over and over i finally ventured inside one day. its a pretty good selection they have. you'd think with some of the larger supermarkets in the neighborhood (like the bridge mkt food emporium) you wouldnt need mom & pop places like this. but when you taste the quality of the fresh fish you'll understand why

More
Zabar's to me is a capsule of my childhood. Since I was a little girl, this has been the go-to spot for my family, who lived in New Jersey. And since moving into the city, I make my rare forays to the Upper West Side for this store, because it truly is something special.
I think the food is pretty good overall; the matzo balls hold a place of honor in any high holiday celebration in our family. If some people complain about the price, then they haven't gone to Eli's or Dean and Deluca's - those places are just exorbitant. The prices for the overall quality I think are justified. It's a happy medium between standard supermarket fare and snootier-than-thou 'gourmet', where the costs seems to support the overhead and not the product. Here at Zabar's, you're spoiled for choice by the array of cheeses, fish, meats, and prepared foods here. Whether your tastes run to the mundane or truly eclectic, you. will. find. something here. No question.
Yes, it's cramped and noisy and commotional, but that's the fun of shopping here. Here, getting elbowed aside by a little old lady in a proper hat and gloves just seems funnier than it does at Whole Foods. I've had my cheeks pinched by the fish manager when ordering their world-famous smoked salmon and had an unofficial advisory board at the deli counter on whether I should get the brisket or the pastrami. Zabar's necessitates interacting with your fellow New Yorkers and whether it's positive or negative, it's always an authentic New York experience.

I wish that during the time I spend in LA I could shop at a place like Fairway. Amazing selection of unique foods and the BEST cheeses ever. Also, the cute restaurant on the second floor is great. The pizza they serve there is divine and really well priced, and so is the caesar salad. Great place to have relaxed lunch in. As far as the store, for the amount of traffic they get on a daily basis, it reasonably clean. It's NY, and a busy store, what do you expect!?!
Pros: Great prices and selection
Cons: Not the most friendly workers

when we lived on the upper east side, we would sometimes make the trek accross the park to get our zabar's fix, but usually it was outside our budget. this place is the next best thing. they have the cheapest produce in manhattan (somehow a well-kept secret), which helps offset the prices of their delicious prepared foods. be very careful when reading the deli counter prices, however - they aren't always in pounds. for instance, the lobster salad is advertized by 1/8th of a pound! seems cheap to see $9.99 as the unit price, but do out the math - it's crazy! still, an awesome place.

A gourmet market on the Upper East side, Butterfield Market is packed to the brim with a fresh produce, specialty foods and imported treats. The prepared food section is worth checking out as well for while these dishes are a bit more pricey they are most definitely worth the few extra dollars.

Formerly known as Healthy Pleasures, this market has seen better days. Lately it seems they don't stock as much variety, and the cleanliness has been lacking. They do have some bright points such as a fresh peanut butter maker, daily prepared foods, etc. On the whole there are better markets to purchase organic food items from in NYC, but if you're in a pinch this one will do.

The name does describe the store. You won’t find a place in New York City that has better prices on candy. How cheap? Here’s a good example. Jelly Belly jellybeans are $9.99-$8.99 elsewhere. Economy candy sells them for $5.99 per pound. Not only is the candy cheap, they also have a large variety. Some of the harder to find candies that were popular decades ago, like candy cigarettes, are still sold there. They also sell dried fruits and nuts. The store itself is neat, but cramped and is usually crowded, but it’s worth putting up with it for the candy.

More inviting than your usual healthfood store; not as daunting as Whole Foods. Huge health-oriented supermarket with nice produce, lots of ready-to-eat packaged meals, hot soups, juices, just about every brand you can think of in canned and frozen foods and a large vitamin / health and beauty section. Helpful staff, too.

if you like creating an internation kitchen in the home this store in the 20s/lex is a must go destination. you really feel like youre walking through a bazaar in the middle east. they have spice and ingredients i guarantee you wont find in your local food emporium. the prices are really quite good too. you'd be nuts to use those mccormick spices when you can get the real deal here...
