Citarella is a fantastic gourmet store, especially when it comes to meat and fish 9their beef and veal are both amazing). As far as packaged good go, they have lots of European things like crumpets and Italian sodas. The produce section is thorough, but not spectacular and the frozen goods are really nice, especially when it comes to ice cream. It's pricey, but not absurdly so. You certainly get what you pay for. It's a very nice easy shopping experience too.

I once saw two fur-clad ladies come to blows over the last halibut fillets at Citarella. Well, it's understandable. This spot really does have the best fish in town.
The aisles are cramped and all the produce and groceries are overpriced, but they do price the fish fairly and the displays make my mouth water.
The staff is sweet--especially considering the nightmares of customers they have to deal with on a daily basis. They even give me cold paks when I have to lug my fish back to Brooklyn.

This place is frozen in time. Its like they've completely stopped taking in new products. Fairway, Zabars, and Westside Market all have far superior selection and prices.

i stop by the grocery store every once in a while if im in the mood for a treat. its kind of a convoluted layout up there. everything is good as you would expect but its definietly on the pricey side. i wouldnt recommend it for staples, but if you wanted some prepared food. also, if you work in midtown they have a nice store with prepared foods that you can take back to the office and heat up

when we lived on the upper east side, we would sometimes make the trek accross the park to get our zabar's fix, but usually it was outside our budget. this place is the next best thing. they have the cheapest produce in manhattan (somehow a well-kept secret), which helps offset the prices of their delicious prepared foods. be very careful when reading the deli counter prices, however - they aren't always in pounds. for instance, the lobster salad is advertized by 1/8th of a pound! seems cheap to see $9.99 as the unit price, but do out the math - it's crazy! still, an awesome place.

Expensive but high quality meats and seafood as well as fresh fruits and vegies as well as cheeses, teas, biscotti, etc etc can be found at this upper east side gourmet market. They have an extensive selection of prepared foods such as sauteed eggplant, sliced pork loin or roast beef as well as tempting baked goods - nice cakes are small but beautifully decorated starting at $10 and petite pastries (like yummy lemon/raspberry/mixed mini fruit tarts and eclairs) are $1.25 each but you have to get at least 6. Can get crowded as store is configured in a 'u' shape with entry at one end and exit the other. Helpful and friendly service.

Located on the Upper West Side, this gourmet store offers fresh produce, seafood, meats, fresh breads, daily prepared meals, freshly ground coffee, kitchenware, oils, vinegars, desserts, fine chocolates, snacks, and more. I've had mixed experiences with the service, at times they are helpful and other times they'll ignore any call for assistance. If you know what you want then shop here, otherwise try some other place.
