Who's the fairest grocery of them all? Contributor on 10-12-2005

The Scene
Even before opening its Harlem megastore, Fairway had long been at or near the top of the produce heap, with consistently high quality, reasonable prices and a selection that includes everything from Asian pears to Belgian endive. It's more than just produce, of course, with typical supermarket staples and just about everything else you'd expect from a gourmet market in Manhattan.

The Goods

The prices at the newer store are about as low as you could hope to find for the kind of quality Fairway offers. If you have wheels and a few bucks to spend, you'd be crazy not to be a regular at the Harlem branch--there's even free parking. As for the original Fairway, there's now a fresh fish counter, as the store has expanded by 4,000 square feet, all the way to the corner of 74th Street.
