I finally ventured out this morning to see the Long Island City Farmers Market. I have been spoiled with easy access to the Union Square Farmers Market, and was glad to find another one that is in walking distance of my house. Unfortunately I was not wowed. There were about 8 vendors with baked goods, fresh beef, fruits and vegetables. I was used the Union Square one where there are easily 25 on any given day. I picked up some peaches and plums from my favorite orchard, but otherwise was not impressed with the selection. It is a good market if you just need a couple of things or want to pick up some fresh bread for lunch. Otherwise if you are planning a big shopping trip, you will be better off making the trek into the city and going to Union Square. The Long Island City Farmers market is in Hunters Point, and is open from July to November on Saturdays only from 8am to 1pm. The nearest subway stop is the 7 to Vernon/Jackson. Just walk a block up on Vernon and it's there on your left. After you're done shopping check out the spectacular view at the river.

I love the Union Square farmer's market. I work nearby so it's a great spot to get lunch and also a convenient place to stop by for ingredients for a quick dinner on the way home. You'll find vegetables you never have heard of, and most of the vendors will take time to give you recipe tips if you need them. There is almost always a Long Island or New Jersey winery represented as well as a few plant stands where you can pick up something for your office or balcony. Chefs from around the area shop there too, do not miss this!!

Although there are greenmarkets throughout the city on various days, this one is by the most popular. Comprised of independent producers of cheeses, baked goods, meats, and produce for starters, there is a discovery with every turn. This is the place where I first discovered carrots aren't necessarily orange, but purple and green too! Or that fresh grown tomatoes, from the more obscure varieties, could practically constitute a dessert in themselves. In peak summer and fall months, Whole Foods nearby pales in comparison to this market, both in offerings and the experience. No wonder why local restaurants make a point of buying their ingredients here - this is a true New York experience.

This is hands down the best farmer's market in teh city. Though it is open several days a week, the best day to go is Saturday, as the widest selection of merchants are there. Choices include fresh cheeses, milks and yogurts, various meats (poultry, vennison, rabbit, fish, etc), maple products, vegetables and flowers, baked goods, wines, candles and honey and even yarn. With planning, you never even need to shop anywhere else, and the prices may shock you with their reasonableness. The merchants there though do appreciate small bills, as it seems everyone always pays with 20's and it makes making change hard at the end of the day.

I love Union Square's farmers' market because it's the one I most frequent. The cookies are delicious, the apple cider is perfect, and their fruits and flowers are fresh. Their organic goods are some of the best you can find in the city. It's also in a good location; afterwards you can go to the Union Square Dog Park and walk your dog, the kind you can do in public of course.

Union Square market is one of the best things in the city. This year I joined a CSA instead, a choice I am pleased with, but I do miss going to the greenmarket and interacting with the vendors. Also, if you like to plant flowers or herbs in the spring DO NOT waste your time elsewhere. You will not find a better selection or better prices anywhere else in the city, trust me on this.

The union square market meets monday, wednesday, friday and saturday and is one of the greenest and largest markets of the city. It offers 20-30 different small new york city farmers as vendors. The produce they offer is organic, free range meat, wine, and vegetables. This market opens from 10, i believe to 5 pm. If you go late you can sometimes catch the vendors at a discount price for their wares. This is a must stop in new york city. Although Whole food opened up recently right across the street, Whole food lacks the charm and intimacy of the food and people here.

Union square is a great venue for this farmer's green market. It's spacious and draws a large variety of people. The produce is fantastic. There are a lot of organic options and many fruits and vegetables. If you get there at the end of the day, some of the vendors sell what they have left over at a discounted price. There are a number of vendors selling refreshing juices. Also, they have many baked good stands with lots of different cookies, breads, pies, and other yummy goodies.

In a city with McDonald's that deliver and a pizzeria on every corner, the Union Square Farmers' Market is a breath of fresh air. Open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays year-round from 8am to 6pm, the market fills Union Square with stands full of whatever fruits, vegetables and flowers and potted plants are in season, as well stands selling fresh meats (buffalo, rabbit, fish, fresh bacon and more), organic eggs, organic jams and honeys, goat's milk cheese, other gourmet cheese and even bags of homemade pretzels. A number of bakeries that set up are one of the market's strong points with their fresh whole grain breads, foccacia pizza and even whole wheat scones and cookies (and if they're whole wheat they don't really count as dessert, right?) The only thing to beware of is the price - many items are more expensive than you'll find at your local vegetable stand, so keep in mind where your budget and your healthy intentions overlap.
