I've always loved dancing, but also found it to be one of the most mortifying things we people do in public. It's like trying to sing in front of people when you can't carry a tune, or public speaking in a foreign language. There's something really intimidating about it, which is why alcohol helps so much.
I took hip-hop here with Jessica, and she's so encouraging and positive that she addresses half the issue with dancing, which is all in the head. But she definitely knows what she's doing and can help with the technique side of the process, so that you're learning the moves in the right way, too.
This isn't the place to go if you're looking to spin on your head and make a living performing at subway stations. But if you want to learn moves you can actually USE, it's perfect! It's a safe place where you get what you put into it--I've loved all the classes I've taken here.
If you're the type to sit out at weddings while everyone else seems to have a good time on the dance floor, you should invest in a class or a private with Jessica--life's too short! Dancing incorporates so many of the good things in life, like music, fun and social interaction. Jessica brought dance into my life, and I couldn't be more grateful. I took a class with Vicky, too, who is the nicest, coolest, and most encouraging person to have ever kicked my ass. So just go, you'll like it.

Pros: You can spend hours there amazed by the sites

It's always great when someone makes you laugh. Unfortunately, the $20 cover + 2 drink minimum might not leave you so happy, search for deals - their website www.comicstriplive.com offers promotional ticket prices, making the evening a big more affordable.
Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to show time. Sure, you'll be waiting a while, but at least you'll have good seats. We sat in the middle and were greatly distracted by the folks behind us gabbing away during the show. Of course, it didn't help that one of the comics was more weird than funny, but 2 of the 4 performers were excellent.

A great place to go bowling. There are very few places to bowl in the city and this is one of them. It's enjoyable with a bar atmosphere. Theres more to do here than just bowl. You can hang out with friends and have a few beers. highly recommended.

Webster Hall is usually a dance club, but they also have a fairly regular schedule of rock shows that are put on by the Bowery Ballroom/Mercury Lounge called "Bowery Presents." It's usually the band who played the Bowery a year or two ago and now need a bigger space. I'd say it's bigger than Irving Plaza and smaller than Roseland. It's more expensive than the Bowery and very weird because you have to enter through the same door as all the clubgoers. The dance club is open during the shows, you are just kept in a separate performance space. It has decent sign lines/high stage and a good lineup of bands.

I go here every few years. A perfect place to hybernate in the rain. You get to see wax figures of numerous celebrities in a party room at cocktail hour. If you're like me and you go clubbing to dance then you will love this place. It is really layed out pefect with the vip mezzanine that overlooks the dance floor and the music is not so crazy loud up there. But when you go down onto the dance floor its like your right in the middle of the sweet spot. The DJ was awesome. He was mixing hip hop with eighties rock and even house. Things I never thought would go together but I couldn't stop dancing. The crowd kept going crazy every time the next song came on. So I would recommend it for the dancing crowd:-)
Pros: Great dance club!
Cons: Located downtown (I'm an uptown girl)

Here is a place where the people working have a passion for movies. They can answer any questions you have, no matter how simple or specific. In addition, they write reviews of their own and post them on the wall for all the new releases. The collection is phenomenol filled with the basic genres as well as international films which you only hear about at the Oscars. To top it all off, the prices here are astoundingly cheap when you pay up-front for 25 movies, you get a special price which equals about $2.50 a movie.

This is a nice small comedy club where many famous & up and coming comedians perform. There is a nice bar downstairs and the whole venue has a very intimate setting. You are sitting right in front of the performer and there are no frills or decorations on the stage. The set I went to see had a very relaxed and supportive audience and you could tell that the comedians felt at home here because they all put on great performances. It is a little bit pricey with the minimum drink requirements, but I was definitely impressed and will be going back the next time I am in the city.
