You can find great bargains at Filene's Basement, but you have to search for them. Unless you get there right when they open, on the morning after they've cleaned or restocked, expect to find the place disorganized and messy. Bargain hunters, apparently, cannot be bothered to hang clothes back up or put that sweater back on the table they found it on. Maybe doing so might cause them to miss some huge bargain?
That said, if you are willing to sort through the mess, you can find some very nice clothing at significant discounts, especially if you are willing to buy offseason. I found some great sweaters last spring that would normally have run me $40-$75 dollars, which I was able to pick up for less than $20 each.
Don't bother asking a salesperson for help finding an item, either. He or she may be able to point you in the direction of the dress section or the men's area, but because of the constant moving of the merchandise, probably can't get more specific than that.

While Filene's Basement is known for their bargains and if you don't mind searching you will find some really good bargains don't come here expecting to find a steal. The place is often disorganized and good luck finding a staff person to help you. On the plus side there is some very good items of clothing and accessories and if you plan it right you can leave there with an outfit or two for a great price.

I find SO many great clothes here in the past month. The hosiery & shoe collection is particularly good. They have a wide variety of styles and sizes (more than just 2s & 6s). I found a great tweed Mac & Jack skirt for under $40, nice button down shirts for $20, Nine West shoes for $40 and a Nautica tankini for $35. All in all it was a successful trip - and at this Filene's, the dressing rooms are comfortably large.

They remind me of T J Maxx, but the brands they carry are much better. The first time I went in and saw their shoe department, I didn't think it was a place I needed to wander into again. But, one afternoon, I looked down the stairs before I went to the T J Maxx two floors above and noticed they had towels on sale, I decided to take a look. I found out then how the store's policy was setup. They do not like to keep merchandise that is not selling, so they mark it down further and further, until it is gone. My fiancee was able to find two nice dinner dresses there for under $25!

I'm not sure who Filene is but her basement carries some pretty choice selections of designer clothes and the prices are even affordable. In New York designer clothes and affordable are rarely mentioned in the same sentence so that's saying something. The basement is often in dissarray since women are often looting the bins and aisles but if you look long enough you can find some pretty nice outfits.
