Broadway Dance Center can be overwhelming. The lobby is always crowded as are the classes, it's hard to get individual attention or feel like you have room to move in some cases. This is especially bad in the summer, when the place has its summer programs and is overrun with girls on school trips thinking this is the one true place to study. It's a bit odd. On the other hand, the facility is nice and large, they have an informative website, an array of dance styles and levels and good teachers. You just have to be willing to brave the chaos. Also, their free membership card gives a 10% discount at many dance related shops.

I am a beginner and am enjoying the customized, expert and patient teachers. The teacher whom I have had the most exposure to is Elena Shabanova. She is doing an excellent job. She is very patient and a great teacher all around, both in dance and overall style and history of dancing

Stepping Out studios is the bomb! They have all kinds of dancing classes for all levels and they even help you find a partner and choreograph dance routines if you want to enter a dance competition. They teach tango, salsa, quick steps, ballroom everything you see on Dancing with the Stars. The classes are fairly priced and you get a discount if you refer someone.

I studied dance here for many years in their old facility (which had a charm the new one can't equal, but the new one is much, much better). The training is excellent and thorough, but not well-suited to other dance styles. Those pursuing other dance work should even be careful about studying here -- Graham work is difficult on the body in extremely specific ways. That said, it's fantastic for developing theatrical expression (especially darker, more dramatic elements), and for strengthening your core and arms.
Graham's work has periodically risked dying out since her death because of schisms within the company and the rather historical nature of how (and what type of) meaning is conveyed through her dance. But it's a critical piece of dance and modern American cultural history.

I stopped by here for a show and I thought the instructors were very good. They did a couple of practice runs and then a whole group did the routine in unison. Meanwhile, I prepared for my lesson and just stretched on the side. My only complaint right now is the space as the studio isn't that big. Also, prices for individualized classes are really expensive.

the studios themselves have a certain amount of character -- old pianos, wood floors, plants. But the spaces are rundown, and floors pitted in places (they're better than many floors in New York, but it only takes putting your toe in the worng place once to have a serious dance injury). The changing rooms are gross, and the last time I was there some altercation happened during my class such that peopel in the hall were threatening to call the cops. Not as bad as Harlequin, but in the same crazy spectrum.
