New York has surprisingly few perfumeries of the sort one sees in European cities—jewel-box boutiques that sell nothing but scents. But this tiny West Village (near Sixth Avenue) store devoted to fragrances (with a smattering of skin care) more than does its part. The romance factor is big, with violet walls, gilded and mirrored furniture, giant bouquets of fresh flowers, and the owners’ tiny dogs snoozing on velvet chairs. Shsssh...don't disturb them! Scattered about are dozens of carefully chosen, relatively uncommon scents like Coté Bastide, Serge Lutens, and Hierbas de Ibiza, alongside better-known lines like Diptyque, Creed, and Santa Maria Novella. Exclusivity doesn’t come cheap—a candle and a cologne will generally run you well over $100—but the shop clerks will take plenty of time to help you select just the right scent, and the gift wrap topped with fresh flowers is a pretty final touch. Great place to get a gift for a special someone. And, it's open seven days a week.

ADV is located on a tree-lined street in the west village (the store recently moved a few doors down to a larger storefront). This shop is a pretty paradise for perfume lovers. No need to trek uptown to Barneys or Bergdorf's, ADV carries a lot of high end perfumes, some of out of stock ones, the traditional ones and a few unique concoctions. My favorite is Creed (spring flower which Audrey Hepburn used to wear) and it's well stocked here. The owners are very nice and helpful. Truly a little gem.

Aedes is a luxury perfume and home fragrance mecca. It carries lines that are of enormous quality but are smaller and more artisinal than department store brands. Aedes' staff is immensely well-versed in the lines and will skillfully guide you whether you need a gift or are looking to pamper yourself. From candles to home fragrance, bath salts to scent, Aedes has something for everyone. The store has a very liberal sample program and the staff will often offer several samples of items that they believe will suit you. And the gift wrapping is unique -- a gorgeous box, spools of double-faced satin ribbon and fresh flowers. Aedes will also do mail or web orders.
