If you need photographic equipment in New York City, this is the place to go. From cameras to reflectors to slide scanners to every sort of paper you can imagine for your photo-quality printer they have it. The store is chaotic and runs on a somewhat bizarre system (note the green bins of goods being moved through the store overhead. They are closed for all Jewish holidays (this means they are closed Friday afternoons and Saturdays as well). But the prices are great. Do whatever research you can before you go -- the faster you can get in and out of this place the happier you'll be.

B&H is the largest and probably most efficient photo shop in the city. The shop offers what most amateurs, semi-pro, and professionals need and they usually have the best prices for most equipment. Its an open secret that the other camera shops in the city often base their prices for used and new equipment off of B&H's prices. I've also purchased music equipment here and found that while they don't necessarily have the inventory of Sam Ash or Guitar Center, their prices are neck and neck.
On the downside, it can be daunting to shop here unless you know exactly what you want when you walk in. The sales staff can be either extremely helpful and knowledgeable or just generally friendly but clueless. For people interested in specialty equipment, they may or may not have what you need so be sure to check their excellent website before showing up. The used department is also directly linked up through the website so be sure to check the prices and stock there before making a trip out.
Be aware that the shop is closed on all jewish holidays so don't count on them being open past 1 on friday afternoon or at all on saturday and keep an eye on their website for other closings.

Even if you are not in the market for anything electronically related you should still go to B & H to have a look. It's massive and it has everything under the sun. When you are in the store look up and see the method of transportation the products take to get from one end of the store to another. They ride in boxes on rails. It is literally a highway for electronic products.

B & H is absolutely without a doubt the best place to shop for all your camera needs. They have a huge selection of equipment for all your photo needs and at good prices. They also sell video and computer equipment. If you are in the market for used items, they sell that also on the second floor. The place can get pretty busy but there isn't really a long wait because they are very efficent. The staff is also really knowledgable.

Think of Disneyland for photo buffs and you might be on the right track. B&H is a block wide and stacked high with every new and exciting gadget, and gizmo known to man. And their prices ain't that bad - despite the glitz and more sales people than most camera stores have customers. One surprise, despite the size, you can get good service and good advice. This was not always true (years ago I heard a salesman tell a client - go to Ken Hansen and ask your questions, come here for the best price). But that has changed. My favorite guys are Stephan (a good photographer in his own right) and Carlos (Ferrari fan extroadinare). Both have knowledge that will guide you toward an intelligent purchase. Even if the store didn't have good prices, the advice from these gentlemen would be worth a premium price. You can buy from their web site but visiting the store is the only way to understand what the B&H juggernaut is all about.

Like my Title says, mimicking the rather annoying tv and radio commercials, B and H really is the place to go in New York for photo and video equipment. With a wide selection and hard to beat prices, 34th and 9th avenue is your one stop shop for what you need. The place resembles santa's workshop with an ironic hesidic twist (only in NY) with a complex arrangement of conveyor belts and elevators for transfering merchandise as well as a station to station method of paying for and recieving goods. Nevertheless, all of this that overwhelms your eye actually does make things move a lot faster and you can be in and out in a matter of minutes if you know what you want. There sales team has its ups and downs depending on who you get and who you are. If you know what you are talking about, you can get first rate service. The only problems I have encountered there asking questions is when I or someone i was with didn't know so much about the piece of equipment we were looking at and then some of the sales people can be a little pushy and snooty. Most of the time I have gotten exactly what I needed, and I have used them for most of my equipment. Nevertheless, my last two transactions required me to go back because I wasn't given the right item and another time, i was sold a returned item that was in less than new condition. I wouldn't worry though. They take things back and give you want you wanted. Also, they have a free parking garage for up to an hour if you are needing to bring your car and don't want to spend 25 bucks on parking in midtown.

The salespeople at B & H are very knowledgeable. They provide unbiased advice and assistance to those who need help selecting the right camera. Whenever I have purchased a camera, I have gone first to B & H to find out which camera to buy. I can sometimes find better deals elsewhere, but I always go to B & H first.
