Just got back from conducting an interview. The interviewee recommended this spot near Union Square. It's the perfect spot to settle in with a good book or to have a low key conversation (loud cell-phone users please pick another spot).
The menu offers sandwiches and salads, wine and many café-type drink options. The sweet selection was excellent. Try the chocolate drop cookies--a savory little bite perfect with coffee or tea.

A cozy little cafe, 71 Irving Place Coffee & Tea Bar is a great place to relax at with a nice cup of tea, a pipping hot cup of joe or a delcious bit of chocolate souffle. The atmosphere is inviting even if the place cam get a bit crowded, especially around lunch time and the after work rush.

This little cafe is tucked in the basement of one of the buildings on Irving Place. Look carefully for it or otherwise you'll miss it. They have all sorts of coffees, teas, bottled beverages, wines, and baked goods. There are two tables outside that are good for sitting and people watching. Inside is quieter and a little dark.
