I love the Frying Pan, because it's so unusual for New York City. Situated next to Chelsea Piers, this bar is on a pier next to an old boat and is a great place to enjoy outdoor dining, drinking and music right on the Hudson River. In spite of the multi-million dollar complex that is Chelsea Piers, there is no pretension about this place. Just park yourself at one of their tables, pop open a beer, and relax while watching the boats going by on the Hudson. They also have an outdoor barbeque and while it's nothing special, it lends to the casual and relaxed atmosphere and makes for a good nosh.
Check ahead though, because it's also very popular for private events which are closed to the public. Their public events, however, are great fun, and in the summer there's usually a weekly dance party for after work.

I'd never thought much of the Supershuttle service in DC (it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either), but since moving to New York it's become my transportation of choice for going TO the airport.
Pricewise, it's cheaper than taking a cab out of the city (there are flat rates in place and nearly all end up close to $50). My fare as a single passenger is $18-20 with tip.
Timewise, they do pick you up a bit too early, but I'd rather have too much time at the airport than too little and run the risk of missing a flight. And, I admit, I enjoy that extra time at the airport to get checked in and partake in the relative novelties of junk food and trashy reading. I've never missed an international or domestic flight when running on the Supershuttle's schedule (though it sounds like other reviewers have...).
Ridewise, I enjoy the Supershuttle because it takes me through parts of the city that I otherwise don't normally explore -- it's nice to cruise through Harlem and the Upper/Midtown East Side as a passenger. The drivers are usually friendly and in relatively good spirits -- once, on a 4am drive, the driver roused our van full of zombie passengers with a breakfast of disco, and we were all singing along by the time we reached JFK (delirium could have been part of it, but honestly, it made the drive fly by).
In seven years of taking the Supershuttle (three years in NYC), I have only had two experiences that I can count as bad ones. Once, the Supershuttle called me an hour before they were due to pick me up and told me that there was no van coming -- I was able to call a car service and make it in time, no problem, but the cost was considerably higher. The other time, the driver got bogged in traffic around the Thanksgiving Day parade (what a nightmare) and we got stuck in Midtown. We hit a blocked street (trucks) and the snotty passenger who was our last pickup refused to walk to the corner to meet the van, insisting on being picked up at the door (which was impossible). It was pouring down rain, traffic was at a standstill, and honestly, I can't fault the driver too badly. He told us to all get out and try to get cabs, which we did. I still made my flight, though most of the other passengers missed theirs. At any rate, my good experiences far outweigh these two unfortunate incidents.
As far as getting from the airports back into the city, I rarely take the Supershuttle -- it just plain takes too long (plan on several hours). Also, at the end of my journey I usually just want to get home ASAP, and so I'll shell out for a cab.
But I do recommend taking the Supershuttle to the airports, if you don't mind going early and having a bit of fun along the way.

The River Project is a marine science field station and estuarium (a museum showcasing the waters where river water and sea water meet) located on Pier 26 - a short walk from Battery Park. It's free and uncrowded. A good place to bring kids - 10 tanks in the front with shrimp, crabs, seahorses, an eel and other fish like striped bass in their natural water environment. The day we went they had a tank with a large turtle that someone had found in the Hudson River. There are some larger fish in the tanks in the back. Very friendly and informative helpful staff.
They also offer free 20 minute kayaking sessions on the other side of the building.
They get by with grants and donations so please contribute something when you visit.

If you live on the east side, this is a convenient storage and moving company to know about - if you are moving a full apartment or only want to store some pieces for a short while. They offer a full range of services around moving, including packing, cleaning, storage and the like. They showed up as promised to provide an estimate, and their mover people seemed strong and capable. They also suggested I plan for the move by packing as much as I could myself, to save some time costs. They will also take on moves in the city, out to the suburbs, or even across the country

To me, Amtrak is the civilized transportation alternative in New York. It's easier to get to than the airport (let's face it, if you fly to Washington DC, the travel to and from the airport is so time consuming that it's the same amount of time to take Amtrak), is clean, fairly reliable and the price point is good That said, the prices do keep going up and the service isn't as good as it once was. That said, if you hate to fly and are going to Washington DC or Boston, Amtrak is a viable alternative.

I love train rides, but somehow, Amtrak is consitently late - and I mean an hour late. The prices have skyrocketed, because there's still no competition, and the Acela just doubles the price of the regular train. Even with the Acela, that train seems to break down a lot. Now, I will say, that's a nice train - whole thing is like being in first class, a very pleasant place to be stuck if you do get stuck.
Otherwise, the regular NE Corridor line is just a pain - always late, don't think the trains have been upgraded for years, interiors are kind of dark, depressing. The seats are fairly comfortable, at the very least, but don't expect a big smile from the conductors - $100 train ride doesn't buy good service.
