In it's heyday, the Village Voice had liberal political clout and was a must read for anyone seeking intellectual cred or classifieds listing men and women seeking men or women. Personals have moved on to the web and been replaced in the back of the book by display ads picturing nearly naked men and women offering themselves for a variety of purposes. The Voice is now free, available each Wednesday evening all over Manhattan and while it's clout is questionable, it's listings are comprehensive, its articles are stimulating, it's critics are articulate and, hey, it's free.

When I was faced with an elaborate bookbinding project in art school, I tracked down Talas. Not only did they have every single thing that I needed (and then some), but the staff was extremely patient and helpful. I was able to buy a range of papers (which they expertly rolled for me in a subway-proof tube), needles, adhesives, and tools -- they had it all. They cater to pros but also have kits for non-specialists. All in all, a great find and art resource.

The newly renovated Symbphony Space now has two performance areas: the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre and the completely rebuilt Leonard Nimoy Thalia. With a variety of acts, ranging from popular music, Gilbert & Sullivan and film classics, Symphony Space is a wonderful destination for this neighborhood. The crowds are appealing and this is a nice place to take children.

More
The company of Swanke Hayden Connell and Associates is a well known and highly respected architectural design firm headquartered in the Puck Building in SoHo. They’ve designed many buildings, including some additions to museums around New York, as well as many projects for the City itself and for private companies. Knowing many of the people that work there personally, I have to say that this company is on the cutting edge of architectural design and would be great to work with.

I've used them a few times, both for business and corporate stuff. They were very good, on time and completed everything nicely. I'm not sure if they are cheaper than the larger chains, but I know they can be quicker because they definately have less business. They also don't have the range of office supplies that Kinkos etc. have.

A.I. Friedman is tucked away in the lower midtown district of art and paper stores, and while the have the obligatory range of paper and art supplies, they also feature an upscale selection of portfolios and bags, as well as high-end design furniture (Eames, Herman Miller, etc.). They also have a small selection of gifts and cards. While not as fun as nearby Paper Presentation or as comprehensive as other more specialized art stores, AIF is a nice addition to the neighborhood and is a good place to buy gifts or hard-to-find items.

Sometimes when you can't think of something to buy for your sweetheart, you might consider a magazine that is geared towards an interest of theirs. My husband just received a subscription to an aquarium magazine by his brother-in-law because his brother-in-law knows how my husband loves his fish tank.
For a woman, it might be a subscription to a magazine like Country Living, Redbook, or Bazaar. Redbook magazine is an excellent choice for it has many articles pertaining to women products, articles, and fitness. There are articles on love and marriage (how appropriate for Valentine's Day), health and fitness, beauty, fashion, news, kids, food and style. The issues are bursting with ideas suitable for a woman in your life.
I know I have used my Redbook magazines to read exclusive interviews of famous people, ideas to end stress in my life, how to answer some of my kid's questions, lose weight, medical facts, and ways to love my man! The variety is endless when it comes to the Redbook magazine. Redbook magazine introduces me to a lot of new products on the market, where to find them, and what web sites to check out. It is a thorough magazine that is appropriate for different age levels.

Rand McNally is only one of the largest maps and globes retailers on the planet. I especially like this one because they are friendly and quick. Now being a history buff, I like to look at maps and stuff like that. Let's see... What does this place sell? Maps, globes, guide books for the city perhaps? Very nice service, A++++++.
