In my line of work i have to travel all over NY, and all of the wonderful gourmet shops around. I've noticed that many products that Zabar's or Dean and Deluca carry are all at Frank's. They are medium priced but what do you expect? you are getting grade A products that vary from meats to produce to great cheeses they even have bread and pastries that bake every 15 minutes, on my way to work i always grab a chocolate croissant! The atmosphere is great! The store also caters, they recently catered for one of our neighborhood building parties and it was excellent, they really know what they are doing. In addition to that they are also very charitable, each year they give out pumpkins, and always help out the church and surrounding schools. Overall, the store is great, and whoever disagrees with me is seriously disturbed! I know good quality food and this is it people!
p.s
We might be in the "hood" but many would like to change that reputation. This is a store that helps change the neighborhood to a family oriented pleasant place to live.

Lobel's is another New York institution, and is part of proper grocery shopping (the kind that involves never, ever going into a supermarket). Fantastic cuts of meat, knowledgable staff and fantastic options for special holiday ordering. Chopped liver is a whole 'nother thing when made with liver from Lobel's, and their veal is incredible. If you're looking for something specific, give them a call befor eyou stop in, to make sure it's available that day. Eating meat should be about more than buying something red wrapped in plastic; this is the right way to do it.

Going into east side glatt, you can see that you can't beat their professional, yet friendly manner. They are just fabulous in everything they know and sell. They can help you with any kind of kosher meat you are interested in. Before travelling anywhere far please go check them out. They are in a superb location sitting in between the Kosher bakery, and the kosher supermarket. All these stores share a few yards of the same block in the ever growing lower east side.

If you're in the mood for seafood, but don't feel like dining out - Leonard's is the answer. This small seafood shop specializes in fish and seafood, while also offering fine cuts of meat on the side if you like a surf 'n turf. The quality of the fish here is significant and evident in the cooking process. This fish is good enough to eat by itself, with no sauces or seasoning. But they give you that option too - providing seasoned fish ready to cook and the sauces to accompany them. Perfect option for when you're feeling like seafood without all the work.

This place is the best as a duel threat: it's a butcher and bakery. First, you can get fresh meat by the pound: steaks, chicken, beef, sausage, what ever you would like. Next, they have the best pastries, donuts, muffins, danishes, and all other goodies fresh each morning. They also cook, each day they have affordable italian specialties fresh for you.

This is my preferred Whole Foods, largely because the store is all on one level, making both intentional shopping and random browsing much, much easier. It also doesn't have near the traffic jams and lines that I've encountered both at the Union Square and Columbus Circle incarnations. For those of you unfamiliar with Whole Foods, it's often referred to as "whole paycheck" as it's easy to spend a lot of money there very quickly. That said, most of the store brand products are excellent and bargains besides, and with the pricier items -- the quality is great and you couldn't find it anywhere else (i.e., cheddar horseradish spread). The meat and fish counters are especially good, and check out the "two-bite" deserts -- brownies, pecan pie and more.

I go back and forth on this issue which has nothing to do with Frank's, because this is a really great shop. I'm just not sure yet where I come out on butcher cut meat and the price tag that comes along with it. I guess it's just to risky to overcook or destroy the meat, so I feel safer buying decent cuts of meat down the street at Western Beef.

This is a tiny little market right in Midtown that sells produce, desserts, and beverages. Although the produce might look a little fresher than groceries stores around it, it's a little too pricey. The selection isn't very big either. I thought this would finally be the place to buy fresh food, but I was a little disappointed. I do notice a lot of elderlies that like to come to the store, but probably due to the convenience and less hastles than grocery stores. Now I only go there to use the ATM.
