This store looks small at first glance, with parts, tools, etc. all the way to the ceiling. But they also have a back stockroom and huge basement that are closed off to the public and full of stuff going back decades. (I was once allowed down there to search for a screen.) I think if it ever existed and is still find-able, you'll find it here. Many of the customers are professional builders and maintenance guys, but they also welcome neophyte neighbors who just want to hang shelves. Very pleasant and patient staff. Not the cheapest, but not outrageous.

I know of only a handful of truly vegan restaurants in the city, so finding this one was quite a surprise! Sacred Chow is a small but beautifully decorated place in the NYU area of the village. It has a very Asian/middle eastern feel, but the food is not like that at all. First, the lighting is subdued and beautiful coloured glass and metal lights hang from the ceiling. The tables are small, but comfortable, some with pillows on wicker stools, others with benches and a few traditional chairs. There's even a small fountain in the corner.
The food is pure vegan - healthy and delicious. They offer a 3 appetizer deal for $12. I tried the "western tofu" sandwich. It had thick slices of seasoned tofu, a dill "mayonnaise" spread and lettuce. The bread was whole grain, warm and crunchy. The dill spread (made from soy of course) was so delicious and did not taste at all like fake dairy. It was served with a sort of cabbage/fruit cole slaw. I didn't try dessert, but they all sound fabulous and I bet taste pretty much like the real thing too. I left very satisfied and my meal was $11 with tax and tip. I will be returning!

This place is phenomenal if you need any types of plastic pieces - I use them as templates for sewing projects and have them cut pieces for me. They're usually able to cut everything within the hour. (Probably could do it faster, but since I work nearby, I never ask them to speed it up.)
They have sheets of plastic in multiple colors and sizes. They also have vinyl - if you want to make your own shower curtain, or pockets on a beach bag, for example.
They also sell glue so you can attach plastic pieces together (you need special glue, and an applicator that applies it perfectly.) I made a little shelf for my bathroom in this manner.
They also sell small circle and square pieces of precut plastic.
Definitely your one-stop for plastic!

One of the better places to stock up on kitchen accessories. This place is more for the Julia Child's than the Chef Boyardee but they have everything you could ever need. I especially love their knife selection. Not in a Norman Bates kind of way. Good prices. Very helpful staff that will go out of their way to help you.

I happened into this store as I was in the neighborhood and was delighted with what I found.
I make crafts and am always on the lookout for gift boxes and display items. This place had everything I could want - huge packages of tissue paper, gift boxes of every size, multiple-sized bags. They also have felt pad displays, as well as necklace, bracelet and ring stands.
Need price tags, labels, or signs? They have those, too.
Prices seemed reasonable.
Staff was friendly and helpful, and I definitely recommend this store if you're in the market for any of these supplies.

I hate this Kinko's with the burning passion of a hundred fiery suns. No, really. Sure, all Kinko's suffer from some equipment that doesn't work and poorly trained, disinterested staff, but this one takes it to a new level. Once, I even had a guy who worked there threaten me when I explained that I had not printed out the several hundred page document full of gibberish one of the printers was emitting (in defense of the larger corporation, when I called the 800-number to issue a complaint, they were very helpful). More often than not, the majority of the computers at this location are broken. The same can be said of the copiers. And once they had no paper cutters for several months because they were apparently stolen!
My favorite Kinko's experience though, involved waiting on a line there that seemed determined not to move. Suddenly the woman in front of me exclaimed, very loudly, and very calmly, "Every time I come in here, it makes me want to die." People didn't laugh, but rather very solemnly confessed their own Kinko's inspired fantasies of self-annihilation.
I used to live around the corner from this Kinko's and it was the bane of my existence. Even if it's out of your way, go to a different on. You'll be much, much happier.
