I often stop in Porto Rico to get a quick cup of coffee to go, or to get my supply of beans. They have a huge variety of fresh roasted beans, and many at a great value. They charge like $.75 for a cup of coffee if you bring your own mug, which is cheap and environmentally responsible. Their mochaccino usually is bad, and subsequently I dont really trust their espresso drinks. The employees are really lax, which is fine if you are not in a rush, but frustrating if you are. They also stock various coffee mugs, filters, pots, etc.
Pros: Coffee Beans, Variety, Value
Cons: Inattentive Service, Bad Espresso Drinks

This is a small warehouse with an impressive collection of high-end beer for sale. Storage is a little dark but that's good for beer. It's a dingy little euro-style bare basics storehouse with a plexi-window booth out front, no doubt highly secure.
They don't have shopping baskets or other cheerful 'store experience' amenities - you are here to dig for treasure, and will save perhaps 50 cents to nearly a few bucks on some beers. So grab a carton, and start looking around the tall, dazzling racks of beer. I truly think if they charge some beers in the 8-10 dollar range, then they HAD to charge in that range to sell it - many notable price breaks are given on other excellent beers they were able to sell cheaper.
I would recc stop by the WF up the corner at Houston, make some notes and come back here to shop first. Whole foods does have some different items, but you will find many of them here and for less geld.
What a find. I say GO!!!
Pros: Selection & value draw you in deep
Cons: You may need a flashlight...

Their prices may be a bit high, but Space Market is one of the most notable delis in all of NYC. Their selection of quality products is astounding. They offer one of the largest selections of hot food of any deli or grocery store nearby. Plus, they have great Sushi (at least for a deli). Avoid lunch time on a weekday though, it's totally overwhelmed by all the NYU students.

Temple is a very tiny, but cute and fresh Korean, vegetarian restaurant near the NYU law school. It's right next to Harry's Burrito's and Heavenly Delights, and it is run by a very strange asian man who sometimes hovers over you in a paternal way and instructs you how better to use the prongs to put food into your container. It is a buffet style place, with a nice variety of food (but with the same, dependable items every day). The food is addictive - so watch out, but it's fairly healthy if you stay away from the fried eggplant in the back. Nice music and quiet seating.

though i've lived in the city for only six years, i have a bit of an addiction for good coffee, so, of the MANY places i've tried, empire, by far, makes the best cup of coffee in new york. (have the house blend - last time i checked it was still only a buck 25 for a large - screw starbucks) but not only do they make good coffee, they are blend MASTERS. ask them what they'd recommend and try a couple - i've been amazingly surprized with the quality and variety of grinds they can conjure from their beans. service is sarcastic, warm hearted, and super quick (sometimes) - this place should be a new york staple.
Pros: best coffee, inexpensive
Cons: , grab and go only

ICY has a great selection of Italian ices in unusual flavors. When a friend from Texas was in town visiting me, we went twice a day so she could try all th flavors including green apple and cantaloupe. They are open sporadically in the summer and not at all for chunks of the winter, so it's unpredictable. But if you're in the area and it's warm out, it worth wandering by to see if they're open.
