One of the first things I learned from professors in graduate school was get to the Coogan's family. I often run into professors and doctors during lunch on Thursday and Friday. I use Coogan's for everything- great for lunch or dinner when my family visits, business lunches or if I need to relax after a stressful week. ( $5 cosmos all weekend)
Over the past 2 years I have probably had everything on the menu but have to say my favorite is the Capt Jack burger(with a pint of Guinness) or the horseradish salmon.
Whether you're living in the heights or just passing through Coogan's is a must!

I love the bar. I've had lunch a few times here and my experiences have varied. Sometimes the service is great and other times it's terrible, but the bar is always a great place to be.

Pros: they have beer, although so does every other bar in NYC

The thing I love about Coogan's is that I can drink and then walk home instead of wasting money on cab fare. It has average decor and average service. The food is reasonable priced, but mostly greasy or forgettable.
I used to love going here after nursing school to relax and have a drink or two. They have 80's karyoke on Thursdays which can be a lot of fun. This place is often crawling with cops, paramedics, nurses, and firefighers. This can be a lot of fun if you are single!
While this is not a trendy spot by any means, it is a perfectly acceptable place to hang out, especially for Washington Heights.

I like Coogan's. Went here for an after work celebration. Decor is interesting - casual and fun. The burgers were really good and the drink specials were great. Overall fun.

After I moved to Washington Heights, I was pleased to find Coogan's. It had a comfortable, grab a beer and burger with friends kinda vibe. The food tastes pretty good, even if the menu is super meat oriented and hardly diet friendly. So first impressions, good.
But Coogans bad side creeps up on you. One, I feel ill about an hour I eat there, every single time. (I know, why do I go back?) Nothing serious, just crampy, unhappy stomach filled with lead.
Two. The service. When I first started going, I often had one or two servers I thought were absoluty wonderful, fast, cheerful, and knowledgeable. (they both had reddish hair, like me, so we liked to joke about being the lone red-heads in wash-heights he he). Then one day they were just gone. I asked the manager and she told me that the were rac ist thiefs. Even if that was the case, I hardly felt she should be telling me that! That same night I was charged for a bunch of beers I never had (Im not even 21!) and when I complained to that same manager she just laughed and basically called me a liar. When I told her I was only 20, and that if they HAD served me beer it would have been illegal, she had some big guy come to our table and demand we pay before they called THE POLICE!!!!
We paid the bill (including the beer) but will never return. Its too bad as its so close to school, but I dont need to be over charged and disrespected by surly restaurant managers.
Pros: location, hours
Cons: manager threatens customers, food sits like a rock in pit of stomach

Great food and ambiance. The bartenders will take care of you and are always friendly. Just an overall spot to have food drinks and oh of course Kareoke on certain nights. So do visit.

i work nearby and am a regular at coogans. this is the nicest restaurant in washington heights. the staff are friendly. the food is good also. i recommend the captain jack burger, delicious. another must try, if you make it to dessert, is the brownie supreme. there are also monthly specials that add variation to us regulars. every now and then they offer chicken penne in vodka sauce with mushrooms (not sure of exact name) and this too is very good. afterwork many cpmc employees come here to relax and have a drink. i like my jd and coke, which the bartenders skimp the jd sometimes, unless they know me. buybacks aren't as frequent as most other bars, unless you become well acquainted with the bartenders and you might get lucky. i don't go to coogans as frequently, but overall i would recommend this place if you're in the area.
Pros: friendly staff, monthly special meals
Cons: dress code, buybacks not frequent
