This place isn't like any coffee shop you've ever been to before. The undertones are Brazilian - the music, the drinks, the menu and the servers (among the most beautiful people you'll see in NYC). Try their plantain chips with sauce to start. They also have great coffee shop menu items like burgers, soups, sandwiches etc. When the weather is nice, definitely sit outside. Great people watching in Union Square. This place is a great stand by. They also have a full bar and they're always open.

Webster Hall is usually a dance club, but they also have a fairly regular schedule of rock shows that are put on by the Bowery Ballroom/Mercury Lounge called "Bowery Presents." It's usually the band who played the Bowery a year or two ago and now need a bigger space. I'd say it's bigger than Irving Plaza and smaller than Roseland. It's more expensive than the Bowery and very weird because you have to enter through the same door as all the clubgoers. The dance club is open during the shows, you are just kept in a separate performance space. It has decent sign lines/high stage and a good lineup of bands.

Irving Plaza is an anomaly to the neighborhood, which features many quaint, upscale restaurants and trendy bars. The space has a lot of character, playing host to countless shows for artists and bands who prefer, or can only fill, a smaller space. It's got a bit of a rock-ish mood, replete with the indifferent staff who man the bars and tickets out front.
I've enjoyed a bunch of shows here, of both the popular and less popular variety. When you've got the space, it's great to be able to be near the artists and enjoy the music in such an intimate venue. But when it's crowded, look out. If you're upstairs, you'll be jostling for space along the balcony, and if you're downstairs, be prepared to be involuntarily lifted off your feet on occasion.

The Jacob Javitz Center has always been an interesting place to go with the family. Not only is it huge and has lots of space they usually have interesting events going on. One time I took my family to see a travel exhibition they were having. It was a lot of fun. You can usually check their website to see the kind of events they will be having over the following months.

Stepping Out studios is the bomb! They have all kinds of dancing classes for all levels and they even help you find a partner and choreograph dance routines if you want to enter a dance competition. They teach tango, salsa, quick steps, ballroom everything you see on Dancing with the Stars. The classes are fairly priced and you get a discount if you refer someone.

You will only come to Roseland if there is a show you want to see here. You will judge the show and the venue by what you see, where you are standing and the way the crowd vibed.
But I want you to know about a little gem inside Roseland - the ladies bathroom. It is huge. There is full length mirrors - lots of them. The first time I was inside there, I was swept away to the mid-20th century when gals and gents would show up to Roseland in their finest to dance the night away. Clearly these ladies needed the mirrors (and the great plush seating area) in order to primp and puff their crinolines. It took me back (not really as I was not alive, but you get the gist).
This is a great little slice of Americana.

The theater at MSG is a nice venue for theater productions like the recent Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby (wonderful!) and children's fare like Sesame Street Live. Best to get seats close up in orchestra so you can really see all the action. They do let you move to closer seats if no one comes for them. Several years back they had Christmas Carol here and did up the lobby in Victorian towns theme and it was really lovely and they sold nice well made ornaments. Now it has devolved into a circus-type atmosphere with vendors hawking popcorn, cotton candy etc at high prices before the show and during intermission. You are better off bringing your own treats for the kids or buying them nearby at KMart or Duane Reades. They also sell cheap toys and flashlights at high prices. Try also to get discount tickets since regular prices are fairly high. Booster seats available for the asking.

This the big question.
The good side: location (two spots in midtown! the 54th Street studios are FANTASTIC. the 8th Avenue studios just pass muster, but some of them are great just due to SIZE). Prices are decent.
The bad side: frequent mis-scheduling/double booking, poor communication with renters, difficulty in dealing with the staff is an almost daily problem.
But in the end, sometimes you just schedule here because you need to (due to space size, time or location). Book late and they give a big fat discount. Just hope that your booking was the only one for that time/space. Or make friends with an employee.

I don't love the Minskoff - it is massive and has very dull decor (gray is the first word that comes to mind). Although it was probably state-of-the-art when built and that was the goal, its bareness only makes me think of how beautiful so many of the other Broadway houses are and how their age gives them charm.
When you are seated in the balcony, you are FAR away from the stage. Bring opera glasses.
The plus side to this theater is that there is a good amount of leg room. Now, if they will only have a show that I want to see...
