I FIRST VISITED THIS SHOP IN 1953 JUST AS I VISITED THE OTHER SHOPS SUCH AS SCHIRMIR AND CARL FISCHER ON 57TH STREET ALSO AMPLY ENDOWED WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC. I DO RECALL AN ITEM I BOUGHT THERE, IT WAS THE PIANO SOLO VERSION OF TCHAIKOVSKY'S MANFRED SYMPHONY AS PUBLISHED BY JURGENSON AND IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. IM SURE IT WAS THE ONLY COPY AVAILABLE IN NEW YORK. I ALSO REMEMBER PICKING UP A PIANO SOLO VERSION OF THE SIBELIUS 5TH SYMPHONY ANOTHER RARITY. IT WAS A DIFFERENT ERA WHEN ONE COULD STILL GET PIANO VERSIONS OF MANY SYMPHONIES IF THAT WAS YOUR PLEASURE. AS PEOPLE PLAY AN INSTRUMENT LESS AND LESS THERE IS LITTLE CALL NOW FOR SHEET MUSIC...

I like Patelson's. I generally don't bother with anyplace else, now that G. Schirmer's has followed the pattern of most other things of enduring value in this country and closed up shop. They are a bit light on organ music, however. Teddy Presser in Bryn Mawr, PA has what seems like most of an entire large room devoted to organ music, at least the last time I was there in 1990's. Patelson's has basically just one medium-sized wall of shelves up on the mezzanine. It's still a decent selection, mind you, but I think they should try to do a bit better--especially now that they have essentially no competition in town.

Across of Carnegie Hall, this store is the mecca of classical music sheet music, long known to classical musicians for being the source to find nearly any written source of classical work you could think of. There are thousands of books here, arranged by your instrument, as well as biographies, histories, and a research department upstairs. Are you looking for a Crumb score? Are you looking for the Goldberg Variations but you don't like the lighter pages of the Schirmer and prefer the clarity, generous spacing, and heft of the Verlag edition? You can afford to be exactly this picky at Patelson's. I know of nowhere else in America with such an expansive collection of classical music to browse. Yet another unique and amazing thing about living in New York. There's a reason this place is just as much an institution as it's more glorious neighbor across the street.

Located around the corner from Carnegie Hall this store is a lot of fun to visit if you have any interest in either subject. They staff knows everything about music and are very helpful. This store is a tremendous asset to the city and to the music scene.
