Not quite as good as Murder Ink on the West Side this shop still does a great job with books of the mystery genre. Sure they'll have books by a Patricia Cornwall or another popular writer but where these specialty shops really shine is in their ability to show you books by obscure or up and coming authors. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and makes great recommendations which they try to tailor to your tastes not to theirs. This is pretty rare in specialty shops as they usually recommend what they like not what they feel you'd like.

A basement level shop filled with mystery books. Scanning the shelves you realize as a genre there is a lot produced on a regular basis. the staff is knowledgeable and extremely friendly and the selection is top notch. Probably the second best mystery book store on the island of Manhattan just behind Murder Ink. They are also very helpful on the phone as I've called on more than one occasion trying to remember the title of a book from snippets of the plot and they were generous with there time.

The Black Orchid Bookshop specializes in mysteries and thrillers. Why New York has so many bookstores specializing in mystery books is a mystery itself? Maybe its because of the weird things that happen here. Anyway Orchid is small but the books but they have an amazing collection of old books and many of the new books are signed by the authors.
