I love this place. Most of the time it is not too crowded so you can grab a beer and some good grub w/o much bother. Later at night, some good people watching. The staff is excellent and the homemade beer is unique. Stick to the lighter beers because some of the ambers are a little too heavy. Avoid the crowds at the "hipper" places and enjoy a beer at WBC.

Live bluegrass - yes (on Wednesdays if I am thinking correctly)! Live other music throughout the week. Baggot Inn is good for the tunes as well as the brews. I recommend getting a group together for pints. If you don't dig the gig in the back, sit up front under the window and just enjoy the bar. It is nothing fancy, but good craic may be found here for pub fans.

Molly Wee's is a neighborhood bar near Madison Square Garden that has been a longtime go-to spot before games and concerts. Situated on a non-descript stretch on 8th Avenue, you feel immediately cheered upon walking in the door. It's modeled after old-style pubs and offers a good selection of draft beers.
As I'm partial to Guinness, I can vouch that they make a decent, but not phenomenal, pint. It's a fun place, so much so that I will cop to a time when a group of us missed a Knicks game so we could stay here. We were slightly persuaded by the huge screen TV over the bar showing the game, giving us the best seat in the house as far as we were concerned.

Until I read the other reviews of this store, I had forgotten they even sell CDs, since I only go in here (and I think this is true of most actors and singers in New York) to buy sheet music. They have all the books from the current Broadway shows, as well as a very thorough selection of classics -- well known and not. They also have sheet music for songs from current (or particualrly well received) films. It's probably the best resource in the city for this type of stuff -- if they don't have it, you'll have to look online.

This place could not be more perfect for the area. The Meat Packing District that is. Its the only "real" joint in the area besides Hectors Cafe.
Great beer selection and also some of the best pub food in the area. . Fabulous Fish & Chips. Friendly and ON SITE owners. Attentive bartenders who remember who you are as long as you don't go in with attitude expecting VIP treatment. Something there is in abundance down here in the MPD on most nights. Its a shame that more places like this have not opened in this neighborhood instead of the generally overpriced and greatly over hyped - owner absent lounge / clubs. What is that - meaning a place in the neighborhood for the people IN the neighborhood.

We went in to wait for our party to assemble before a Saturday Broadway matinée - we just sneaked right in after having bought tix on Times Square. The place was awesome! Healthy selections (got my carrot juice! Yeay!), FREE tea/coffee AND juice or cocktail after 11 am; excellent bread! If you are careful about menu selections, you can't beat their prices! I mean, my friend got fresh coffee, a Bloody Mary, and a fancy clam chowder (clams come on a plate, and the waiters pour bouillon over it at the table) - all for $8 total! Omelets are fantastic, too. I can't believe that price/quality in the middle of Manhattan!
The waiters were nice, if a bit hassled - but then, the place was overcrowded the entire 2.5 hours we spent there.

Yesterday, Sunday, my best friend of eons got married. Of course as the Maid of Honor I had to find a place to bid farewell to her single-hood. China Club has been around for a few years now and it hasn't missed a beat. GREAT music, decent priced drinks for a club in the heart of NY, mixed crowd... The bouncer was so nice he let us all cut the line!! PLUS we didn't pay a door fee b/c we were on the velvet list. Forget about what those lousy comments say...round up your favorite people and take a trip to China!

Red is a great bar located right at the South Street Seaport. Friendly bartenders make running a tab that much easier. There are a few bars on the outside of the bar as well, whihc are open just about all summer long. When it is nice outside, you can people watch, or get a tan while getting your drink on. Great location, and great mixed drinks combine well here...

Fanelli's has been in the same place since 1922 but there has been a new owner since the early 1980's. Fortunately it still has the feel of a down and dirty artists' bar where you can get some food with the alcohol. The dinginess also effectively keeps out the people who are more comfortable at places like the Merc bar down the block.
