My girlfriend Liz (of Madrid & the Canary Islands) had her birthday dinner here a couple of years ago and I became hooked. Great tapas, delicious sangria that wasn't too-too sweet, and a long bar just waiting for folks to settle in for the night.
You might think, how did this work for a birthday dinner as y'all sat at a bar? We had different tapas plates served at different seats and mingled to get to the various foods while chit-chatting with the others who congregated around a particular plate. It made for a nice night of grazing/mixed conversation and was one of the more interesting parties at a bar I have been to in New York (she didn't rent the space out -- we just kind of took over).
For a while after the party I tried to find the joint when I was in Soho to no avail. Finally, I wised up and looked for the address so that I could burn it into my memory for future reference. Sometimes I just crave some good small plates...

I love N~ (which is actually what the place is called, but it's hard to render it in type or the phone book). On a dark side street, and barely labeled (so make sure you give very clear directions if you don't want to be stood up), this long narrow bar has great tapas, good drinks and an incredible, sexy atmosphere. Unfortunately, it's also often mobbed and is poor for groups of more than four or five (and that's even debatable -- there are only two tables -- everything else is bar seating). Go early, or not on the weekends if you want to eat and avoid the scene. Tapas prices range from $3 to $10 and include cubed salmon, a sautéed spinach with garlic and chicken croquettes. One of my favorites.
