If you're looking for a worthwhile savings account, look no further than ING. Their current interest rate is 4.5% and it’s always higher than your average bank. There are no fees, and you can earn money for referring your friends. You can set up a regular transfer of funds from your bank account to your ING account, and transfer money back whenever you require. (Note, when you transfer money between an ING account and a bank account, it takes about 3 business days. Important to note if you’re about to make a payment that depends on the funds.) The savings rate just keeps going up and up, it’s a win-win no matter how you look at it, and you’ll wonder why you haven’t invested in one before now!
Security is excellent – they just upgraded it to a 3-step process. To open the account go to www.ingusa.com (CONFIRM) send a voided check from the bank account you want to link to ING (or is it $5?) to the address on the website and in a few days you’ll be all set up!

This branch is very convenient for ATM services since it closely located on a major street as well as being by transportation hub for both the LIRR and Nassau County buses.

Have been gloing to this same Citibank for years. Personnel has changed a lot the last few years, but always friendly and extremely helpful. Is relatively small which gives you a more "family like" feel when banking there. The staff is very reliable and nice and always go out of there way to help.

This is the bank that I decided to open an account with when I moved into New York City. I researched a few of them and Washington Mutual definitely offers a lot of benefits and doesn’t charge you a lot of fees. They have free online banking and bill pay and free checking. Savings account is free, but I needed to either keep $500 in it all the time or agree to an automatic transfer from my checking account every month.
Customer service is pretty good. When I opened the account, the representative wasn’t extremely knowledgeable, but this might have simply been an anomaly.
Washington Mutual is a very good bank to have in New York. They have locations all around the city. If you are looking for a bank, I would definitely consider this one.

I never thought I'd be writing a review for a huge banking company but here it is....
The Bank of America on 53rd/Broadway in Manhattan is by far the best I've been to. I was having some issues with a broker last month and really so stressed out about all of it. The manager and staff of this branch waived all fees on their services for me and all I had to do was ask! No convincing/arguing, etc. It was so simple and it saved me some money. There is always a greeter at the door who will ask you if they can help you with anything so you don't have to wait in line for the teller. I was just so impressed with their costumer service, especially being such a huge corporation w/so many locations in the city. Maybe they see me as a "regular" and that's why they helped me out, but it was exceptional service nevertheless.

I would recommend Emigrant, but not necessarily their physical branches (although i don't have any experience with their physical bank so I can't say positive or negative). Rather, Like ING, Emigrant's online banking offers extremely high rates. Right now, Emigrant is at 4.0%. They also have no minimums or requirements and you can open an account with $1. Emigrant generally has higher rates, even compared to ING and other online banks. Their website isn’t as intuitive or user friendly as ING so that is something to take into consideration if you aren’t a computer whiz. However, they do have higher rates in general. I have an account with Emigrant and also with ING. I know people that switch money back and forth depending on which bank has the higher rate, but in reality, this will only earn you a few more dollars a year. I would suggest looking at both and deciding based on the other variables like website and customer service, but would definitely recommend opening an account with at least one of them.

While I don’t' have an account with Bank of America, I have had to use them occasionally to get quick cash when there were no other machines around. The good thing about Bank of America is that they do have branches and ATM's at a lot of locations. This is good if you are a customer, but if you don't, I would try to avoid using their ATM's. I was at the Miami Airport and had to get cash. Most banks charge to use their ATM's if you don't have an account with them, but these charges are usually in the $1.00 - $2.00 range. Bank of America wanted $2.50 to use the ATM. This is the highest I've ever seen.
