First things first -- Zaro's is not the best bakery in Manhattan. I am not trying to say that. But if you're in Grand Central Station, need a quick birthday cake or just a cookie with a cup of coffee, you can't beat Zaro's. This bakery has the standard offering of bread, rolls, etc., along with delicious cookies and cakes (try the black and white cookie!). Their prices are reasonable for New York -- I don't spend more than $3.50 on a cup of coffee and a big cookie. And you can't beat the convenience factor if you're headed for your train and need something quick to munch on.

Has anyone ever seen a Zaro's outside of a train station? This bakery is so specific to New York's transit hubs, that it is for me, and probably tens of thousands of New Yorkers the taste of Metro North. Cookies can be very dry, almost dusty, but they have a specific peculiar sweetness that's oddly satisfying. Everything here is supersized -- from the cake slices to the scale of teh cookies. Their holiday (particularly halloween) cupcakes and cookies are especially fun and vivid to bring as a gift for your hosts.

My friend Stewart dragged me to Yonah Schimmel's on one of our explorations of the City. Our goal is to amaze the other guy with his city knowledge. Well, Stew amazed me with my meal at this nearly 100 year old establishment.
I had a thing called a knish made from potatoes. A potato knish is a mashed potato snowball cooked or more accurately baked with spices. They have other flavors but go for the potato - you'll love it.
Like most "soul" food, a knish is a simple, filling and slightly fattening dish. I prefer mine with brown mustard but you could follow your own heart and still come away with a taste treat.
Add a cream soda and you have just become a real New Yorker.
This place is a treasure. Go, you'll thank me.

Great little cafe! Not much room inside, but I always take out or call for delivery. I usually order the Nolita sandwich (grilled chicken breast, fresh mozzarella, tomato, sun-dried tomato) and replace the pesto sauce with Honey Mustard. They generally use focaccia bread & it's never soggy when delivered! Salad greens are very fresh! I've been there at least 15-20 x's so far & they're great! Fresh ingredients & good prices!

If you are looking for the perfect black and white cookie, look no further than Greenberg's bakery on Madison between 82nd and 83rd streets. While this bakery bakes up every kind of cookie possible, I only go for the black and white's which are cake like. They are moist and chewy with the perfect amount of sweet icing on top. They can satisfy any sweet tooth! They are kind of pricey per cookie ($3.00) but are definitely worth it.

Whole Earth Bakery is all vegan and kosher, so most people can find something to eat there. I recommend staying away from the chocolate stuff if you really like sweet chocolatey stuff, because it is made with fruit juice instead of sugar and isn't very sweet. However, I love all the fruit things they make, like turnovers, pies and interesting raw cups of fruit and cashew butter. They also have pizza and smoothies and make made-to-order cakes for special occasions. The owner and workers are all really nice and I recommend checking out this bakery and supporting them.

Veniero's is one of the best pastry shops in NYC, and I live right by Little Italy. Sometimes I find myself wandering here after a late-movie or dinner, to get desserts I didn't even know I was in the mood for until I happened to be on 11th St. There is almost always a long line, so you have to wait until they call your number to place your order, but let me tell you, it's well worth the wait. They have the best fruit tarts and their individuals cheesecakes are like like individual pieces of heaven. Although I prefer to get my tiramisu from Sambuca's, Veniero's sure knows how to make a mean tart.

The cupcakes from Cupcake Cafe are almost too pretty to eat...that is until you have tasted one and you can't wait to shove the rest of it into your mouth. REAL BUTTERCREAM. YUM. No sugar flowers -- BUTTERCREAM FLOWERS. Both the golden & chocolate cakes are moist & delicious.
You may go into a sugar coma after eating one (or two...), so throw the rest in the fridge and enjoy them tomorrow with piping hot coffee. They are worth the trek to a not-so-populated part of town.

More
If you're ever coming home on the weekend after a fun night out with friends and just need something sweet, you must stop by a Bread Factory Cafe. I've been to 2 on the west side and they are open 24hrs. Some are small and serve only pastries, breads and sandwiches, but the one on 8th Ave. has pizza, a salad bar and panini's. They're relatively inexpensive and the cookies are massive! I've only been during late night when it's not so crowded but I've sure it's a great spot for lunch too.
