Trash & Vaudville is actually two stores - an upstairs and a downstiars with seperate entrances. The upstrairs is more goth, with some punk, and the downstairs is more punk with some goth (and also shoes). Darkity dark dark. While the occassional bargain can be found here, being a queen of the night takes cold hard cash, and you can expect to spend big dollars here. They're the best source of Jeannie Nitro's fabulous goth dresses in the city.

New York manages to be the harbinger of some many unusual niche stores. Tender Buttons is no exception. Around for almost 50 years, it specializes in high quality, handcrafted, imported buttons. The workmanship is superb, the selection extensive, but the prices high. To replace the buttons on a dress shirt with pretty mother of pearl ones, expect to drop between $10-20. Leather buttons for a jacket come in at around $15.

The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. The reupholstering of my chair and ottoman was done in a timely fashion and the workmanship far exceeded my expectations. I originally chose them because of their longstanding excellent reputation and their very fair price. Highly recommend this company.
Pros: fabulous reupholstering job and great staff!
Cons: none

I defy anyone to walk out of Beads of Paradise without having purchased anything. It's shelves and cases are crowded with beautiful, unusual ethnic finds for decorating the home and the body and its prices are reasonable. Silk scarves in all the colors of the rainbow, bowls and boxes of unique materials and patterns, all manner of one of a kind jewelry tempt and tantalize. Oh, and they even have a terrific selection of contemporary and antique beads.

For those of you out there that might sew or knit, you MUST visit this store. For yarn, after visiting so many shops in the city where a skein or ball of yarn costs upwards of $20, this store has just about every major brand, or something comparable for a lot less.
They sell basic hardware for knitting and sewing (needles, cutters, etc.) and TONS of ribbon, BUTTONS, and thread. Check out their zipper selection - every size you need, and a back room full of fabrics.
HIGHLY recommend checking out this store to save some money if you're a craft-person.

I went to this store to get supplies for my art class and the prices are really high. They had cutting mats and T-squares for double the price compared to Pearl Paint. I suggest you go to Pearl Paint if you want better prices and are a student (like me) on a budget. The sketchbooks for also priced more here.

If you're like me and love to walk into any knitting store, you will feel right at home at The Woolgathering. I learned to knit there, have spent many hours working on patterns, and just dropped by to chit-chat. A great knitting store and much more!

More
Nellie M is a fun place to shop, as they have a colorful and wide selection of clothing in one store. There always seems to be something unique and "different" to be found here, whether it's a skirt, a piece of jewelry, or a little handbag to go with your outfits. The styles cater to women who linger between feminine and classic. There is nary a modern or contemporary piece in sight; this is definitely for the girly girls in the house.
The staff, however, is one of "those" - the "Pretty Woman" kind as I've mentioned before. You must be dressed and made up to the hilt for them to blink an eye in your direction. Now, we all know this is wrong, but they didn't get the memo. So, if you're looking for a different size or have a general question, you're in the wrong place. It's (nearly) every shopper for themselves.
