I first became aware of Bendels when I was ten years old watching the movie It Could Happen to You and Rosie Perez went shopping there in the movie. As an adult I stopped by and was floored. The store is huge and the cosmetics, accessories and clothing are gorgeous. Then I saw the price tags. Yikes. No wonder this store is on 5th ave aka hawk a kidney to afford anything avenue. Great place to go if you have the bucks but avoid if you are knee deep in depth.

I don't buy anything at Bendel's but candles. Odd? Maybe, but I find their clothing to be largely overpriced and not worth looking through such a small selection. The house cashmere is beautiful, but I hate dry cleaning or hand washing anything. Guess I am just lazy.
So, I still come through Bendel's to browse through the goods (esp. handbags, accessories & make-up) and usually end up buying one or more of the candles. They make great hostess gifts and keep their scent for a long time (especially if you buy the little silver candle cover). My favorite is Tuberose.

This is one of the most expensive make up and clothing stores in New York and they have the goods to back it up. The store is very huge and has beauty products from all the top makers in the world: Lancome, Estee Lauder, Perricone the works. This place puts Sephora to shame. Great place to go if you have the money to afford any of the products. If not I here window shopping is the in thing.

as you wind your way upstairs it just gets more and more decadent -- you can find just about anything in this store. my favorite part is the second level where you can hunt for accessories and the first level is the beauty products. it's a must see (or more accurately -- a must indulge)!

This store reminds me of a dollhouse for real women: the clothes are soft and supercute, it smells chocolatey, the lotions are supple, the salespeople are well-dressed and always smiling. Basically it's any girl's dream to shop here. Lacy and girly, you can't leave Bendel's without buying something.

This store is a gem in midtown. It's very pretty inside and the winding staircase is fab. They have a great selection of makeup on the ground level and always offering makeovers. On the other floors, there are the latest offerings from hip designers, clothing, an agent provacateur boutique and a hair salon.
The only two downsides are the prices and the lack of shoes. How can they not sell shoes? This store is totally a girly-girl's store sans the shoes.

Although this store may be too high priced for 90 percent of New Yorkers to actually buy things, it is a treat to pretend you can afford it by browsing the racks of unique clothing and jewelry and taking the spiral staircase up the many flights of costly goods. The salespeople won't bother you if you don't look like a celebrity anyway...
