I was originally drawn into H&M by the relatively low prices for men's fashions that didn't toe the usual urban and sports lines which most other clothing stores followed. The variety of offerings was nice as well as it gave me a choice between the cheeper casual lines as well as the more expensive formal business wear (which was still very reasonably priced). Even though I'm a small size (right on the bottom end of the sizing chart) I was always able to find a few items which I actually liked.
However it seems that the buyer for the NYC stores decided that they no longer needed to distinguish themselves and they converted the casual lines over to frat boy central. I'm still able to find things in my size but not as often. The more expensive lines are still nice looking... but they don't cut them as small as the casual lines so I can't find anything. Bastards.

I think H&M is just fabulous. Mainly because without fairly every seasonal collection has a number of historically inspired pieces, which is my one and only fashion concept. I have fuschia velvet frock coat from there, and a fabulous brocade military style jacket I picked up there years before that was the fashion again. Last season I even found a skirt with a faux bustle. Their stuff is of reasonable quality and very well tailored (although stuff runs small -- particularly in the shoulders and bust, so even though they carry up to a size 16, bigger girls may struggle there). You can shop here and get a very fashionable but mainstream look or come up with something really interesting. Good prices too.

H & M has quite a few branches in Manhattan. I always manage to find something to buy there. The prices are pretty reasonable, especially the kid's stuff. For kid's summer clothes you just cannot beat their selection and prices. They have very cute dresses for girls and very nice t-shirts for the boys. Prices are better than Gap.

H&M can be cheap, or it can be expensive depending on what you buy. Their accessories (jewelry, bags, belts etc) are usually reasonably priced -- I'm a big fan of their earrings. Most of their clothing comes in many colors and sizes. Since there are two stores within blocks of each other in Herald Square, and each store is rather large (and stocks different things!), there is plenty of merchandise to browse through.
