No matter how old I get there are some things that remain the same and my childhood love of comic books is one of them. I don't read them half as much as I did as a child but it's still nice to pick up an issue of X-Men every now and them.Thankfully, NYC is full of great places to scan comics and Village Comics and Collectibles is one of them.
Though not quiet up to par with Forbidden Planet and St Mark's Comics, Village Comics and Collectibles is still better than your average comic book store. Among it's highlights are it's great staff as well as it's inclusion of indie comics. There is lots of merchandise overall and a bunch of adult comics, if that happens to be your thing.

Whether you are looking for a travel set, a child's first set, or a collector's or showpiece item (I have a mother of pearl inlaid Egyptian board from here), this place has what your looking for. Pieces to replace lost ones, chess timers/clocks and books are also available, as is instruction. A very neat place.

If you want high end then this place is for you. They have a large selection of gorgeous tiles in all types of materials and textures, I was in love with the glass tiles they sold which looked so much better than other stores I had visited earlier that day.
The customer service is impeccable and they will help you find what you need or what to achieve in terms of looks. Worth stopping in to take a look around.

I saw this store in an article about neat things to see in NYC. I love japanimation and all sorts of kid toys, so I had to see. They have since expanded and carry a larger selection of toys that when I first started going a couple years ago. Piece of advice, if you see something you want, buy it. Items just walk of there, after you look at it. Their prices are high for some items and they are really big on vintage toys and signed memorabilia.

They call this place "the poor man's house of style" and it lives every bit up to that nickname. I try to go every week because they always get in new shipments of great merchandise. Everything is a bargain. High-end clothes here are affordable--cashmere sweaters for $50, suit sets for $150, elegant dresses and handbags. The only thing that is not that great is the shoe selection, unless you have big feet. All the smaller sizes don't have that great a selection of styles. And the cherry on top is that the staff is all extremely nice.

New York manages to be the harbinger of some many unusual niche stores. Tender Buttons is no exception. Around for almost 50 years, it specializes in high quality, handcrafted, imported buttons. The workmanship is superb, the selection extensive, but the prices high. To replace the buttons on a dress shirt with pretty mother of pearl ones, expect to drop between $10-20. Leather buttons for a jacket come in at around $15.

This is a wonderful store. Sure you can't afford much, if anything there, but the glass sculptures are awesome. If you are in the neighborhood it is worth it to just walk in and look around. That said, you can pick up some fancy glassware as well for a price. If you are looking to spend some serious coin on a dinnerware glass set, this is the place to do it.

They actually have two locations now, one in the village and the other in battery park city. Known for their ability to find rare comics/ collectible, they'll allow you to order any collectible you can think of if you can afford it. If not, they still have a very extensive collection of comic books. Their collection of models are also very good including some really rare first generation star wars toys. I would recommend bringing a child here to start their new hobby since they have so much to offer.

Up a flight of steps on th Street this shop has a pretty good selection of new and back issues. They seem to avoid the clubby atmosphere that pervades so many comic shops which is kind of nice. The back issues are priced fairly and the staff is always friendly. I've shopped here maybe a dozen times and have yet to have a bad experience and since shopping 8th street is fun I'll probably be back at some point in the future.
