Kind of small and up on the second floor these guys have been plugging away satisfying east siders comic book cravings for years. The selection isn't great but the service is A+ , the staff is always friendly and they know what they have. Nothing is cheap here but a block away from Bloomingdales what do you expect. Worth a look see when you are in the neighborhood as they have enough boxes of back issues that they just might have an oldie you've been looking for.

I've been to Il Buco about a dozen times and it manages to impress and surprise me in a new way each time. My last visit was no exception. Though it was a busy Friday night, the staff was uber-pleasant and welcoming, unhurried and eager to make sure we were happy with our table and then well attended to throughout our meal. Unlike so many other lookalike Italian restaurants that serve taste-alike food, this restaurant seems to find a way to introduce something new every day. With market-fresh produce and the dishes that are inspired by them, you always feel like you're eating the best of each ingredient at its peak of flavor. Not sure what to order? No problem, the wait staff is helpful and knowledgeable.
The noise level is unfortunately pretty high, especially in the area near the entrance and bar (thought the bar crowd itself is pretty tame). If you want a quite(r) table, there are two two-tops that are set aside or you can always ask for the far ends of one of the several huge communal tables. You really have to request the two-tops or quite tables in advance or you'll be put in the middle of other diners already shouting to be heard. There is also a round table for four or more next to the bar that is pretty ideal if you want to see the street. The back-most room is very dark and can be warm in the summer because of it's proximity to the open kitchen. For the same reason, it's a perfect place to be seated in the fall or winter.
Highly recommended.
Pros: Food, Service, Decor, Location
Cons: Noise

This Chelsea staple has been serving up comics for years. A decent array of back issues, I've found a few real bargains here, most of the more popular new comics and an interesting selection of old magazines especially movie and science fiction related. The staff isn't particularly friendly but once you familiarize yourself with their back issue system or can locate what you want although sometimes I've found the store cluttered.

Olde Good Things is expensive. There, I said it. Now that I've put that to rest, lets get to the crux of the matter: The quality of their antique furniture more than makes up for the price. If money is no object when it comes to furnishing your apartment, then this is the place to go. Come to think of it, since most apartments in New York City are priced in the stratosphere anyway, is the price of a little antique furniture something to quibble about?

New York manages to be the harbinger of some many unusual niche stores. Tender Buttons is no exception. Around for almost 50 years, it specializes in high quality, handcrafted, imported buttons. The workmanship is superb, the selection extensive, but the prices high. To replace the buttons on a dress shirt with pretty mother of pearl ones, expect to drop between $10-20. Leather buttons for a jacket come in at around $15.

Not only do they carry the manga series PRIEST, by Tokyo Pop but they also stock dolls, figurines and all kinds of collectible memorabilia! I love that I can call ahead and reserve a copy and how friendly and helpful their staff is. Their hours are convenient but they can get pretty crowded. I have a hell of a time finding parking but it is worth it!

More
Jim Hanley's Universe is located in NYC near Madison Square Garden, and is popular with the tourists. There's always a huge influx streaming towards this place. Maybe that accounts for the lackof back issues available, but they are trying to fix that problem. If you are selling a good collection, they might offer you some good money for it. They carry everything from the two big publishers to all indepedent comic books. Lots of merchandise is readily available. There is also a lot of comic book signings from the many writers and artists who produce them. Even celebrities come by and grace their presence at this store. As you can imagine this place is packed as a result. It's a fun place to visit if you are in Manhattan and wish to experience something on a bigger scale. Definitely a treat.

The moment you step in you giggle with the funny sign on the door and the assortment of things that will stir your memories. I was so psyched to see Hello Kitty, Pez dispensers, Carebears, Pound Puppies, jelly bangle bracelets, those weird charm necklaces we used to wear and the biggest assortment of barbie accessories I've ever seen! Their location is great too because it's a short walk to Pommes Frites where you can get sinfully yummy fresh cut belgium french fries with all kinds of dipping sauces and you're literally around the corner from the east village hot spots. I love this place! I hope they're around to make my son feel like an old fart someday!

They call this place "the poor man's house of style" and it lives every bit up to that nickname. I try to go every week because they always get in new shipments of great merchandise. Everything is a bargain. High-end clothes here are affordable--cashmere sweaters for $50, suit sets for $150, elegant dresses and handbags. The only thing that is not that great is the shoe selection, unless you have big feet. All the smaller sizes don't have that great a selection of styles. And the cherry on top is that the staff is all extremely nice.

Love pens? If so, you have to shop here. These guys eat, sleep and dream pens. The shop is beautiful with enough goodies to tempt even a confirmed BIC or hotel pen user. They carry everything and they KNOW about what they sell. These are real pen experts and they will listen to your needs or wants and get you the best instrument (OK, pen) for your world.
If you live too far from NYC to visit (a thought too sad to contemplate), try their web site. It's simple and their web specials are really special.
Their day in and day out prices are quite good - better than your local Staples and as good or better than many other famous pen purveyors.
They repair pens (that's the hospital part). They buy used pens (no, not the BIC). They sell vintage pens too. A full service pen store.
A real NYC specialty store and a must visit for pen geeks like me.
