Way too expensive for how good the food is, crowded, and not that fun an atmosphere. SEEMS like it should be a fun atmosphere with the retro styling but once you are in there it is mostly just loud and annoying and has lots of screaming children. I love children but not when they are all screaming. Never gotten any food there that I liked.

At this retro style luncheonette, the decor is fifties but the food sensibility is modern, and that's not always a good thing. There is a no-fat, low-fat approach to a lot of standards that may make the health-conscious happy, but what is the good of retro without the flavor?
A favorite with families, Johnny's is friendly, and the menu has a little bit of everything for everyone. There are old-fashioned burgers (and turkey burgers) served with the sweet potato fries that are probably the most popular menu item. There are a few Jewish deli favorites, diner standards, a full breakfast, and plenty of fountain drinks. The school photos from Newton schools of decades past are a hoot. The food is eh, but there is usually a crowd waiting to get in, so go figure.

Why doesn't someone else open up a diner or breakfast place in Newton Centre (if the same block can sustain two ice cream places, surely they can sustain another diner!). It's incredible how popular this place is and how crowded it can get. The breakfasts are good, and they have frappes and yummy sandwiches and other things. The diner decorations are always fun, and sitting in a 50s style booth is fun. All of that said, these are indeed Newton Centre prices for pretty basic items with average sized portions. People go because there's nothing else like it around. Service is definitely always frenzied and hurried. It's not uncommon to see a line out the door, especially weekend mornings.
