The Breakers is the most fantastic of all the mansions in Newport. I refuse to call it a summer cottage like they do. It is truly fabulous. The architecture is amazing. Carved wood, marble and gold leafing adorn it. It is too spectacular to try to describe. It is a must see. If you only have time for one mansion make the Breakers the one.

This is my husband's favorite of the mansions, so of course we always hit this one first. It's really the best tour on the street. They have the individual headsets so that you can tour the mansion at your own pace. There are even selections in the menu in each room where you can get further information and history on the things that interest you there.
I love the dining room tour myself. Especially when you select the description of what meal times were like in this mansion's heyday. So many courses and they are described so vibrantly!
I've taken 3 different sets of out of town guests to this mansion first and they all agree with me, after seeing a few others, that this tour is really the best.

Even if you only have time to tour one or two of the mansions....you just can't make a visit to Newport without seeing one! They offer tickets to see all of the mansions or you can get admission to just one or two. I recommend putting the Breakers on your list......this is the largest one I think. They are all awesome in their own right.....each mansion has something special to offer. All are breathtaking! I also especially like Elms too... If time allows.....go out of town and take a tour of the Topiary gardens also a part of the Mansion Society.....they have extraordinary topiaries of animals and lovely flowers and shrubs to look at.

Every image on the walls in the gallery is simply gorgeous - jumping out at you as though it was real-life. They have inexpensive posters, middle priced framed prints, right on up to very expensive digitally produced images on canvas! The staff is very helpful, and you can order any image in any size. The great thing is that they change the images around in the gallery quite often, so its fun to stop in and see what is new!

Not limited to Newport in scope, it includes other parts of Rhode Island as well as Southeast Mass. The museum includes shops and even a small art school.

The Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, Rhode Island is one of those small, intimate movie theaters that used to be the norm before the era of multiplexes and surround sound. This is a great choice for the art house crowd. The decor is downright baroque compared with the sterile environments of modern movie theaters. I give it two thumbs up:)

The Breakers really has to be seen to be believed. This home to the Vanderbilt family is nothing short of opulent. Guided tours allow you to walk through selected rooms and see just how comfortably the family lived. The overall experience really depends on who your guide is on the tour. I'm a professional historian, but our guide was dangerously close to sucking all the excitement out of the tour. It's not a cheap tour, but it's worth it!

If nothing else, Newport is about boats. With water on all sides, you will find no shortage of yachts in Newport, so a museum dedicated to them is highly appropriate and makes a lot of sense. Located in one of the area's most scenic parks, enjoy yachts of all shapes, sizes, and vintages.
