I first stumbled across Chen's while in college. I was in the computer lab and someone ordered in Chinese and apparently thought no one would notice the Chinese food smell. It smelled really good and I asked where they got it, and it was Chen's. I was impressed that the chicken entrées were made of large chunks of chicken breast , not tiny pieces of guess what part of the chicken this might have been stringy pieces. The sauces are not all the same for the different entrées, each is a tasty sauce appropriate for that entrée.
Especially impressive is the specials, such as the great lunch special for about $4 that is very generous and runs until late in the afternoon. (College students at SCSU can order at lunch prices all day) The specialties include 21 fried baby shrimp, which are usually large shrimp, and very fresh and tasty. Wonton soup for $2 comes with about 6 -7 large wonton in it, the small $1 comes with at least 4 wonton. The platters are generous, they have delivery, they include a free eggroll or soda with a $12 order.
There are two or three small tables, but it is primarily take-out. Everything is cooked to order.

Having outgrown its Wooster Square location, Chestnut is a welcome addition to a dynamic collection of JudysBook type businesses on State Street. Located next to the Pantry, an Oriental Market, Across from an excellent coffee shop, Chestnut is justifiably jamming during lunchtime. Food is delicious, made on premises, and priced fairly.

China King is situated at a busy part of Chapel avenue. It is your usual Chinese take-out, with the standard menu. The food is not bad, slightly above the average Chinese take-out fare. Be sure to try out their fried chicken, which is plenty cheap and rather generous in portion.
PROS: Cheap
CONS: Greasy, service a bit slow

The City Farmers' Markets of New Haven are a joy and a delectable delight. The Wooster Square Market opened in May, the rest (in Fair Haven, Edgewood, and Downtown) open in July.
All the produce is Connecticut Grown, lots of growers are organic certified or use organic methods, and everything is delicious. Here are a few of my favorite things:
Farm River Honey
Cato Corner & Beaver Brook Farm Cheeses
Fabled Foods bread
free-range eggs
GREENS!
and this week...strawberries.
See you at the market!

There is no New Haven tradition finer than Claire's cakes. My favorite is the Lithuanian Coffeecake, but the carrot cake and chocolate varietals are divine as well. It's all about the frosting, that incredibly light and creamy vanilla buttercream (light refering to texture, not caloric content...it may be pure fat. But who cares?).
If you get past the cakes, (although really, why would you? Have the cake. For lunch. Or breakfast. Or dinner. Why not?) Claire's has a wide variety of vegetarian options, some in a Mexican style, some in an Italian vein, all filling and tasty. The service is friendly and accommodating, if not particularly fast, and there's frequently a local artist exibiting on the walls.
As a bonus, being an exclusively vegetarian restaurant, Claire's is certified Kosher, if that concerns you or one of your dining companions.
It's also right across from the Shubert, so if you're having lunch, you're likely to see some of the cast members of whatever touring broadway show is in town at the table next to yours.

Clark's is just about what you'd expect from a diner-type restaurant. It's open, with a center island where they make both the food and also shakes. It's very closeby to many things on Whitney avenue, so it's a convenient eatery for many. The "restaurant" side of Clark's serves mainly hot plates and pizza while the "dairy" wide is pretty much devoted to sandwiches and (of course) ice cream, which they are more known for. The food is excellent and portions plentiful for the money you pay.
