Archie Moores bar/restaurant in New Haven is known for it's really great chicken wings, check them out at happy hour! Tends to be crowded on the weekends, but a great place for lunch during the week.

Arethusa Bookstore on Audubon, Specializes in out-of-print and used books, as well as first and early editions. Has great sections on religion and philosophy, languages, and history.
High quality books, a frequent favorite of Yalies and Yale alumni, I love browsing never knowing what treasure you may find here.

Sure, there's now a Cold Stone Creamery in New Haven where you can get whatever you want mixed into your ice cream. Who cares? Ashley's has flavors you'd never dream up on your own, but are orgasmicly good and exactly what you wanted before you knew you needed them. Seriously. Best ice cream ever.
My favorites - the sweet cream (no extraneous flavors to get in the way of absolutely pure ice cream...makes vanilla taste lurid) or coffee oreo (dark yet creamy, incredibly complex and textured)
And, the drawings (some by children, others by the childish) will keep you entertained as you eat, if you don't grab your cone and walk around in the summer evening.

When my husband and I decided to learn to cook Thai cuisine, we couldn't find galangal anywhere. Finally, we asked the folks at our local Thai restaurant where we could find galangal and green papaya...they sent us here. It's a tiny little hole in the wall on route 80, around the corner from a Domino's pizza and a cell phone store...but it has all the Asian ingredients you could hope for, either frozen or fresh, with an emphasis on Thai imports (although chinese, japanese, and korean specialties are available). The proprietress may look at you funny, and ask - in a stern voice - what you are going to do with the ingredients you're buying. However, if you explain to her satisfaction what you are trying to make, she'll help you out and give you tips or her own family recipe.

I dream about their berry bread pudding. I prefer it chilled (not nuked) with berry sauce on the side. The black bean soup is filling and flavorful. Atticus panini is FABULOUS a thick slice of Vermont ham. The bread basket is fun with various types of artisan bread from Chiabata and assortment of jam and jelly. Croissant is delish. Coffee may be super good or not as good (but always better than marginal). The place has wireless connection. I'll take Atticus over going to the big bad national coffee shop chain across the street any day!
Pros: dessert selection
Cons: unpredictable quality of coffee

More
Nestled right on the most heavily frequented strip of Chapel Street is New Haven's gem of a bookstore, which also happens to run one of the best bakeries around. Naturally geared towards the student crowd, the bookstore carries more than the usual blockbuster. The selection is eclectic and sometimes surprising, and it is almost as much fun to browse the aisles for books as it is to take one out, order a scone or a muffin, sit down and read through it. Since Atticus is located right in the middle between two world-class museums, it is not surprising that the selection of books on art and photography is especially strong.
More friendly and cozy than the big chain bookstore nearby, Atticus is a delightful place to stop in, spend an hour or quietly sip coffee while reading a book.

Au Bon Pain is the place you go to when the next door much cooler coffee shop is packed. It has a nice bright atmosphere, with free wifi. The coffee and pastries are standard, nothing much to shout about. This place just feel so out of character for a town like New Haven.
PROS: bright, lots of space open
CONS: boring

More
This copy shop operated by father and son makes course packets for nearby departments and caters other printing needs. Its unique advantage is that it is located quite far away from other copy shops. Another difference is that the stores also sells wrapping paper and nice greeting cards, which could be good to have available in a neighborhood without much choice for shopping.
