One of my favorite Thai restaurants in New Haven; the service is great, always have enough water and can easily get waiters's attention. The food is good; highly recommend the noodles (all of them). Sometimes the ingredients are not super-fresh ...

If you think a small sports store can't compare to a larger corporate monstrosity, you're wrong. This store has practically anything and everything to do with tennis, raquetball, etc. They have shoes, clothing, and racquets that you won't find at bigger name places. And even if they didn't the knowledge and help that they can provide, you'll never find at a big store.

I first stumbled across Chen's while in college. I was in the computer lab and someone ordered in Chinese and apparently thought no one would notice the Chinese food smell. It smelled really good and I asked where they got it, and it was Chen's. I was impressed that the chicken entrées were made of large chunks of chicken breast , not tiny pieces of guess what part of the chicken this might have been stringy pieces. The sauces are not all the same for the different entrées, each is a tasty sauce appropriate for that entrée.
Especially impressive is the specials, such as the great lunch special for about $4 that is very generous and runs until late in the afternoon. (College students at SCSU can order at lunch prices all day) The specialties include 21 fried baby shrimp, which are usually large shrimp, and very fresh and tasty. Wonton soup for $2 comes with about 6 -7 large wonton in it, the small $1 comes with at least 4 wonton. The platters are generous, they have delivery, they include a free eggroll or soda with a $12 order.
There are two or three small tables, but it is primarily take-out. Everything is cooked to order.

Viva Zapata was just a minute or 2 walk from where I used to live, so I've been there several times. Unlike some other Mexican retsaurants, Zapata is not all decked-out in what you'd think as "mexican" decorating; rather, it reminds you of an old cabin in the woods. Thus, it's a pretty dark place to eat. The food is excellent and prices OK. Portions are large, like other mexican restaurants. Of course, it also has a well-stocked bar as well!

More
I wouldn't say Willoughby's is the best coffee shop but it's probably the best here in New Haven. I order my coffee mostly mail order from the west coast (Seattle etc.). Personally, I like the smaller chains personally more than the behemoth national chains (e.g. Starbucks) which to me tastes burned and pretty much indistinguishable from one cup to the next.
I order both whole beans and single cups from Willoughby's - though mostly the former. They have a huge selection of French roasts and beans are dated to ensure freshness. I think the House Blend and the Downtown Blend are the best. I also like the French Roast Columbian for the French press.
The sales staff are helpful when buying beans though not as accomodating l when buying coffee supplies. But you could say New Haven isn't a very friendly place in general.

Richter's is located on Chapel st. in the heart of the city. It's a rather small place with a small dark storefront, so it looks unattractive (rather like a biker bar!). Don't be fooled by the exterior. It's main calling is as a bar, with a wide selection of beers and liquors, but they also serve food. the food is like any other bar or pub, mostly burgers, fries, etc.. Prices are on the low side while providing bigger than average portions. It tends to be packed on the weekends though.

I went to college in New Haven and when I wanted to treat myself I went to Panache to get my hair done. For me, the price was a little higher than average, but the quality of service and outcome of my haircut was definitely worth it. I never had to make a reservation, but did usually have to wait a couple of hours for my appointment when I called to schedule one that day. There are two Panache salons in New Haven. Either one is good, although I went more to the one on Chapel St.
