The Children's Museum is a perfect place to bring young ones or even to go when you are bored.
All the rooms have a specific theme and they are changed periodically. The experience is terrific as you always walk away from it with knowledge of a particular subject that you never had before. It's not specifically catered to a specific subject (for example, science or nature) but you'll always have something to talk about.
Parking is located nearby and is close to a lot of restaurants for a complete afternoon.

This park is terrific. It's on the New Haven/Hamden line and is huge.
The park at winter time is usually transformed into a slide and sled park. Families come from all over to sled down the mountain that's nestled inside the park.
The park has a history of more than 100 years and even features an old home which is the current home of the care taker.
Perfect for picnics, the park has on-street parking which is usually very easy to find.

Over in Westville is a lovely little park. It's got trails for wandering (or mountain biking), picnic tables in the sun or shade, some streams and ponds, and enough open fields for several independent games of soccer, wiffleball, rugby, or what have you. Near Ella T. Grasso, there's a playground with your typical swings and junglegyms, and the coolest fountain/concrete sculpture I've ever seen, meant for kids to splash in on hot summer days. On the other end of the park, near the Whalley/West Rock intersection, there are basketball courts with a nightly game, and a skateboard park (though, if you're a voyeur, I haven't actually seen the kids do much that's either impressive or life threatening).
If you're looking for a change of scenery for running your dog/child, come check it out. Otherwise, it's not worth a special trip if you're not nearby.

My child has been in the Edith B Jackson Child Care program for more than a year. We are all satisfied with the program. Teachers are very kind and the atmosphere is like a family. My child miss friends and teachers in the program during weekends. The tuition is a little high, though. I'm more than happy to see my child grow in such a good environment.

The Peabody Museum is a great place to take the kids. We go at least once a year. The Milford Public Library has a free pass you can borrow for a few days. The Peabody has a wonderful dinousaur room that the kids absolutely love. We went one time and they were having a scavenger hunt in the dinosaur room where you had to search for dinasour facts, and the kids got a prize at the end. This museun is just the right size too, not to large yet not to small.

If you think a small sports store can't compare to a larger corporate monstrosity, you're wrong. This store has practically anything and everything to do with tennis, raquetball, etc. They have shoes, clothing, and racquets that you won't find at bigger name places. And even if they didn't the knowledge and help that they can provide, you'll never find at a big store.

Since my hubby wanted to check out the climbing face of West Rock (open to sport climbers, unlike East Rock), we went for a hike this afternoon to see how easy the approach was, how safe, etc. It's not the most scenic hike I've ever been on - poison ivy is ridiculously omnipresent, and the rewarding view at the summit is of the Merrit Parkway if you don't know to keep going just a little further (unintuitively)...but it's a nice hike nonetheless, with a bubbling brook, plenty of shady/wooded trails, and enough rabbits in residence that we saw two on our half hour trek. Plenty of picnic benches, and we saw evidence of mountain bikes. Great for those looking for something new to do, particularly if East Rock is one of your standbys.

Not only is the art fantastic here, but the space they are presented in is equally breathtaking. It is obvious that a lot of planning went into this art space. I think everyone should go even if they think British art isn't there thing. Where else can you see such fine pieces with FREE admission.

My favorite gallery in New Haven, the British Art Center is an exceptionally well curated museum. Its permanent collection is impressive, it brings in some excellent traveling shows, and has a great educational program to supplement your experience - great docents (frequently Yale students), occasional film screenings or musical performances, and other innovations.
If you live in New Haven, don't overlook the BAC gift shop during the winter holiday season - they've usually got the most creative/unusual/attractive holiday cards in town, at reasonable prices.
During the summer, remember - it's air conditioned.
