The Peabody Museum is a great place to take the kids. We go at least once a year. The Milford Public Library has a free pass you can borrow for a few days. The Peabody has a wonderful dinousaur room that the kids absolutely love. We went one time and they were having a scavenger hunt in the dinosaur room where you had to search for dinasour facts, and the kids got a prize at the end. This museun is just the right size too, not to large yet not to small.

As a New Yorker, I couldn't help feeling like the Peabody was just a miniature version of the American Museum of Natural History Museum in NYC. It is much smaller and has less stuff in each exhibition, but considering the fact that people in New Haven may not want or be able to go all the way to New York, it is still a good thing to have in Connecticut. There are little bits of everything you'd expect--dinosaurs and wooly mammoths, Native American artifacts, and a very old mummy.

I love this museum. I grew up going to it on field trip and such and now I take my daughter there. She gets so excited every time we go especially over the dinosaur exhibits. Both of us never get bored of going. It is a nice, clean, fun place to go for a day.

Yale's only museum dedicated to science rather than art offers a great display of artifacts than try to relate to the casual visitor the way nature was formed. It houses an impressive number of collections, of which I was most interested in the meteorites and the historical scientific instruments. In addition, the museum regularly puts up temporary exhibitions to complement the permanent collections.
For anybody interested in science and scientific history, this museum is a must-see.

I grew visiting this museum every so often and it's nice having a place like this in your backyard. They mainstays over it's 20 years have been it's dinosaur collection, stuffed animals, birds, and minerals. Some smaller exhibits rotate but those are ok. Now this isn't even comparable to the Natural History Museum in New york but it's not bad, especially for the kids.

If you are looking for a great educational experience for all ages, Peabody Museum is the place to be. It's perfect for dinosaur lovers and those who wish to have a delightful experience of the past. Great educational experiences such as making your own plaster casts of dinosaur footprints from millions of years ago, as well as guided tours are available.
In addition, they also have many artifacts on display from the Egyptian period as well as mummified Pharaoh's!
They have plenty of things to see and do, including a full-sized dinosaur (REAL!) on exhibit. Located in downtown New Haven, CT, it's also close to all the shops.
The museum also has a gift shop where books and replica artifacts are for sale.

From the dinosaurs to the dioramas, the Peabody is the perfect local day trip for people in southern CT. There are many exhibits that are permanent (the dinosaurs and kids room) and some that are changing constantly. My 4 year old loved the feel and learn aspect of the museum, and I loved the cozy atmosphere- just go at your own pace. With lots to see and do without being overburdening, I recommend this museum to everyone.
