Cutlers is a nice alternative to the music superstores. For their size, they have a great selection of CDs. It's not all pop and top 20 -- they have a good array of alternative as well. The store and the staff are very laid back -- but knowlegable if you ask them. It's centrally located in New Haven -- very near Yale University -- so there are always college kids in there. They've been around forever -- so locals shop there too. Prices are competative and fair.

Cutler's has been a mainstay of New haven for decades. They have an enormous selection of CD's spanning all genres. Cutler's buys and sells used CD's and DVD's. They have a separate classical store and a large vinyl selection of electronic and urban music. I once was in the store when Courtney Love and little Bean came in before a Hole performance at Toad's Place. You can't go wrong with the prices and service.

Cutler’s is a no-thrill record store, and it is the only record store in the area. If you are trying to get a last-minute gift, this could be a place to go. If you are in no hurry, you can probably find better prices on the Internet. The business also features a classical CD center.

part of the reason that cutlers is so good is because as far as music goes, there aren't many other options in New Haven. However, I always used to look forward to walking by the store and listening to whatever was playing over their outdoor speakers. They also always had a dry erase board outside with the upcoming music, which gave me something to look forward to (and probably helped sales on new release Tuesday!). Their selection was good overall, and I always seemed to find what I was looking for.

Located in the heart of downtown Yale, Cutler's is still in business after decades of service.
Cutlers is best known for their classical collection of music -- they still sell records and tapes of original musicians.
They also have a wide selection of not so well known artists which attract all the Yale students. Although they don't really deal with the underground collection, they have a lot of no-namers as far as music goes.
They also buy back used CD's, so you can easily unload some old music that you no longer listen to.
It's been a staple in New Haven for decades and I'm sure they'll continue. The place is enormous so plan to spend a lot of time there!

Come on, Powers That Be: New Haven ain't so small that you gotta have only one CD store in the whole town. Sheesh. Yale University is here, for crying out loud. Cutlers has knowledgeable staff, a decent selection, and a number of broken-down listening stations. You can't pre-listen to anything, including the used stuff. They have DVDs, records, tapes, and a nice classical music selection too. You can get a stamp card that lets you buy ten and get one free. That sounds nice but overall the place is a rip-off. I'm sorry; I'm just used to the robust underground music scene of my hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
