The Wave Gallery is one of my favorite gift shops in all of the many cities I've ever lived in. They have a wonderful selection -- you can find something appropriate for pretty much anyone. They have cards, candles, jewelry, knick-knacks, art and tons of "cutsie items." Prices are reasonable -- depending on what you buy. They do have a nice selection of items in many price ranges. Their merchandise is unique and fun -- not what you would find in a traditional chain card or gift shop. I love to shop here -- and I see something new each time! Highly recommend.

This crazy little shop near Toad's Place is one of the coolest places you'll come across in New Haven. Tons of coo, trippy, one-of-a-kind things that you'll never see anywhere else. My Mom loved it too!

I don't know how these guys do it, but their flowers and arrangements are absolutely beautiful!
I've used them in the past for several parties and special occasions and have been thrilled every time. They aren't cheap -- know that in advance. But, you'll have terrific bouquets of flowers that will last a long time.
Enjoy many hard to find flowers and know that they will take your arrangement very seriously. They know their craft and they know their flowers.
They are extremely busy, especially in wedding season, so expect a wait if you aren't there first thing.

More
Ten Thousand Villages sells handcrafts made by Third World artisans and pays them fairly for their work. This makes the items more expensive, but allows you to buy things with a clearer social conscience. Some of the items are not as good of quality, but there are some excellent gifts to be found, including some very beautiful and reasonable jewelry. The store also carries a full line of the Putumayo world music CDs, and offers excellent free coffee to people browsing. They carry items such as handbags, scarves, children's toys, pottery, wooden chairs, jewelry, and even kites. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Everything Irish. Jewelry, handmade ceramic dinnerware, wedding candles, great woven clothing (the average jacket costs about $300; a scarf $100). The tea bar at the back is cute - they've got some nice Irish fare, like fish, but no vegetarian.

When Geraldine's was on Church Street, she was right across from my office. It was one of my favorite pick me ups to stop in on my lunch hour and buy a bouquet - sometimes for a friend, sometimes for myself. The store smelled great, there were tchotchkies to poke at, and you could see some of the gorgeous centerpieces, etc. she was preparing for events. She does great work! My favorite benchmark for a florist - tell them what you want to spend and have them surprise you. Her $10-$20 carry out bouquets are gorgeous and varied.

A multi-purpose high end gift shop and invitation store. They do beautiful gift wrap and have a wonderful selection of greeting cards. They also do custom invitations for all occasions, bar and bat mitvah, weddings, showers, etc. They have both formal printed invitations and invitations that have a more handmade feel. They have a large selection of gifts for a variety of tastes and price ranges. It is a small store, while children are welcome, you do have to be careful since there are many breakables.
Check out their clearance section as well - you can always find a bargain or two!

I love walking into Sogno...and the fact that it's a "boutique of dreams" just makes all the haphazardly arranged beautiful but unusual (if not odd) items that much more intriguing. Stationery, knick-knacks, t-shirts, marabou festooned anythings, teapots, jewelry, magnets...there's bound to be something perfect for the person on your gift list.
The problem is, even if I'm convinced the perfect gift exists, and is somewhere in Sogno, I usually can't find it with all the clutter and aesthetically pleasing chaos. It's also a bit pricey. Still, totally worth the shopping, and when you DO manage to find exactly what you didn't know you were looking for, it's great fun.
