I've only been to Hot Tomato's for martinis and dessert, but served as a great place for just that. Inside, the buliding is very nice - open, with plentiful seating. The martini list is quite extensive - my personal pick is the lemon drop martini. The desserts are very nice but on the pricey side. You may want to call ahead if you are coming with a large group. The servers I had were incredible at keeping orders straight even within a large group. While it's not something I'd do every week, it's a welcome change of pace and a great treat when you have an out-of-town guest or big date.

I was not truly prepared for the selection on the menu. I have eaten sushi many times in many places, this was different. My taste buds enjoyed an explosion of flavors and combinations I would never have thought of under the guise of sushi. Though not any inexpensive meal, one well worth enjoying and taking others to. My one criticism is the available drink menu. The availability of some less exotic saki and or beer would have been desireable. Our waitress knew the entire menu by heart and was very helpful. An asside comment, though tall, she kneeled down to our level while explaining the menu and looked us in the eye.
Pros: The FOOD
Cons: high priced, drink selection

More
There is no New Haven tradition finer than Claire's cakes. My favorite is the Lithuanian Coffeecake, but the carrot cake and chocolate varietals are divine as well. It's all about the frosting, that incredibly light and creamy vanilla buttercream (light refering to texture, not caloric content...it may be pure fat. But who cares?).
If you get past the cakes, (although really, why would you? Have the cake. For lunch. Or breakfast. Or dinner. Why not?) Claire's has a wide variety of vegetarian options, some in a Mexican style, some in an Italian vein, all filling and tasty. The service is friendly and accommodating, if not particularly fast, and there's frequently a local artist exibiting on the walls.
As a bonus, being an exclusively vegetarian restaurant, Claire's is certified Kosher, if that concerns you or one of your dining companions.
It's also right across from the Shubert, so if you're having lunch, you're likely to see some of the cast members of whatever touring broadway show is in town at the table next to yours.

When we were deciding where to go for Thai food, there were many restuarants in the area to choose from. However, we noticed that this particular restuarant was always full with people dining so we dicided to try them. What we found was modest surroundings, good service and delicious food servie in large enough portions that you shouldn't walk away hungry. Also, the prices we definitely reasonable. If you like Thai food, you'll like this place.
Pros: Great food, excellent prices, large portions
Cons: None
