Zaroka is one of very few Indian restaurants in New Haven. They have a lunch buffet, which is OK price-wise, but very good in terms of quality. You'll often find it packed for lunch as it is in close proximity to the medical area of the city, so if you're going for lunch, go early! If you'd rather wait for dinner, anytime is fine as they accept reservations. The inside is very well decorated. The food is quite good and plentiful, but prices kind of high.

More
Yankee Doodle on Broadway in New Haven is a tiny griddle that has quietly toiled away for three generations making sandwhiches the good old fashioned way. Every single item on their menu is cheap, fast and real good. They even have their own hamburger relish that is addictive. This is one of the great restaurants of New Haven, a must try that is every bit as legitamate as Louis lunch. If you are a bigeater be sure to try the doodle challenge which is up tp thirty six burgers at this writing. The Yankee doodle has been in numerous national publications and has been featured in a documentary of the burger.

Yeah, I'm biased. This place is trying to compete with Starbucks, Panini, and Subway, all at once. Imagine all three together and you've got what Cosi is going for. They have good coffee, amazing bread (extremely high in cholesterol), and some really delicious sandwiches. The decor used to be hip five years ago. The service is actually not bad, considering the workaholic, bean-counting management. Oh, and they changed their name to Cosi - that's a bad PR move, in my opinion. What's wrong with "Xando"?

I wouldn't say Willoughby's is the best coffee shop but it's probably the best here in New Haven. I order my coffee mostly mail order from the west coast (Seattle etc.). Personally, I like the smaller chains personally more than the behemoth national chains (e.g. Starbucks) which to me tastes burned and pretty much indistinguishable from one cup to the next.
I order both whole beans and single cups from Willoughby's - though mostly the former. They have a huge selection of French roasts and beans are dated to ensure freshness. I think the House Blend and the Downtown Blend are the best. I also like the French Roast Columbian for the French press.
The sales staff are helpful when buying beans though not as accomodating l when buying coffee supplies. But you could say New Haven isn't a very friendly place in general.

Not quite the Starbucks type of feel, but you get the gist. It is more a tea shop feel than a coffee shop. While I was not crazy about the taste of the expresso, it sure kept me awake that day. The pastry however, was quite good and their was a fair selection. There is not a place to sit, which makes it difficult to savor your goodies. It was charming inside.

This is a great arts center to use as a rental hall for small parties for children or small business gatherings. They coordinate activities for childrens parties including building projects the kids can keep. The room has nice details yet can accomodate any decorative decor you might need to bring, and parties or gatherings for both adults and children do not look like they are out of place. It is probably too small for a wedding, but perhaps a bridal shower could fit. Located in a nice part of town. I believe they have a website you can get more details.

More
The super stop and shop in Westville sells kosher meat, which is nice, but if it's at all convenient, it's worth your while to stop at the Westville Kosher Meat Market instead. The prices are a little better, the variety is much greater (veal, bison, duck and other goodies instead of just beef or chicken), and the owner is a sweetheart. Introduce yourself once and she'll remember you forever. (And, if you're single, may possible try to set you up)
Also sells deli stuffs and Israeli imports, and can handle small catering projects.
Incidentally, if you don't keep kosher, consider buying kosher meat anyway. It's more expensive, but it guarantees humane slaughter, vegetarian diets, and better all around treatment of cows.
